First and Second gigs....DOWN....

Man I wish I could have posted more recently.. but in a matter of a week, I went from having a nightmare first gig, to redeeming myself the following week and really being proud and happy of what I have accomplished.

Last Saturday I spun at this lounge in Northern Virginia, and let me tell you, if i could write the book on nightmare first gigs, this was the night. First of all the place is small and has once subwoofer way back in the back of the lounge. I got up there for my first 2 hour set in public, EVER, and couldn't hear a DAMN THING. I was mixing out of the speakers hanging from the freagin ceiling, w/ no BASS coming out of them. I started sweating bullets... not only that, but the decks i was using were cheap and the pitch control, if u nudged it moved like 3 bpms!!!

Dont get me wrong, i'm a firm believer in the craft and a true dj can kill on any equipment...but i'm a novice, and i was hating life.... as i was trainwrecking all over the place... i was just trying to get by...through bass down on the upcoming track and just sliding it over when i brought it in... (oh yes, i know...this is NOT any sort of dj'ing form).... as i got off the decks i swore i wanted to punch the wall... the worse thing about this is... NOBODY KNEW WHAT I WAS GOING THROUGH... my friends and crowd were clapping...I got so damn pissed thinking they were "just being nice" and being my good friends, u know??? Turns out when i went in the back, the sound is so crappy, u couldnt' hear the mixing anyhows!! LOL, so all u could hear was track selection...LOL LOL ... either way i was pissed...

I came back last night...brought all my own equpiemnt... brought my phat ass monitors, powered those up along with lounges equipment, and used them ass main out speakers too....

AND TORE THE PLACE UP ....

I have never had so much fun, and was awfully damn proud.... So to all you dj's out there...there's never a gig you can't come out of, where you haven't learned SOMETHING.... take it from me... I wrote the book last week ... Just wanted to share a big moment for me ... Hope it didn't bore you... thanks for listening...

Believe me bro, that has happened to all of us at one point or another. It's the first, but it definitely won't be the last. Congrats on your first gigs.

Dude, that must've sucked. Especially when you thought your friends were being nice when in fact they couldn't even hear your mixing?

Anyway, glad you redeemed yourself. So when's your next gig? :D

Nicely done son. :)

Have you told the place how bad their equipment is? Maybe they aren't even aware of their problem... :conf:

Sounds like a harrowing experience the first time around, well done on the second time. Next time remember to bring these things

4 leaf clover
lucky charm braclet
bowel of lucky charms
mix with your fingers crossed, and you legs
prey (or get drunk if not religous)

Hope your next set rocks the house.

A lot of the time people wont even notice how good/bad the mixing is, especially if the place is filled with people who aren't there particularly for the music, like at a bar or lounge kinda place. Good to hear you did yourself justice the second time round though. And good luck for next time.

My first gig was horrible as well:

In a huge skate indoor skate park (massive reflections)
No monitors
Sub amp was clipping and shutting off randomly, nobody would fix it
Had to mix with headphones only, which was fine, but when there was an 18 going strong a few feet away, made it nearly impossible to hear
ty needles kept losing a channel - had to change needles twice
RCA's came looose on the mixer, cutting one channel completely for minutes before someone fixed it.

All that in under an hour! Still, it was fun as hell.
