I'm skeptical about what the award really means, because being the Grammy, it'll probably go to some EDM producer who's remixed a commerical artists track, kinda like Deep Dish or Hex Hector. And while i don't want to take away from their achievements, i think it's just a bloated award that really won't represent the very best of the EDM scene.

Also, i wonder just what impact the grammy acceptance of EDM as a category will have on the further commercialization of the scene, now that it's going to recieve it's own nominations. I guess only time will tell...

I agree with you. I don't trust those people to rate and award achievement in the electronic forms of music.

Vanguards like Brian Transeau (BT) did a lot to champion the introduction of this award and bring it on. Fantastic. :)

“There was extraordinary resistance,” Transeau says. “I think that there is a lack of seriousness by the people who have been involved in NARAS for years when it comes to dance music and electronic music.”

Indeed. I find it hard to believe it's still perceived by some, mostly elderly, people as being a novelty and a fad that will pass over -- especially since it has already endured the heyday of the Moog in the 60s, disco in the 70s, and new-wave and the emergence of acid house in the 80s.

Kutos to BT; that guy's awesome!

keep in mind, as "true" EDM fans, we're a small demographic in North America. Jeez, didn't Bob Dylan win a Grammy not too long ago? FFS, who the f**k had heard anything out of him, or seen him in the news over the last 10 years??? But his album was critically well received (by older, white critics) and bought by a lot of people (older, white people, lol).

I can already see the award nominees: Moby, Chemical Brothers, Daft Punk, DJ Sammy, etc. LOL

Don't expect to see something like Matthew Dekay beating out Scumfrog for remix of the year anytime soon. but...I suppose it's progress :D

There was a HUGE industry party @ Avalon, in Hollywood last Tuesday to celebrate this new category to the Grammy's (EDM). Junkie XL, Oakenfold, The Crystal Method, and BT all played a one hour set..... so I'm thinking those guys will be nominated? :)

You can't expect Matthew Dekay, or Scumfrog, or some other producer/dj who is unknown to the public to be nominated. Like you said, it's progress. Give it a few years, and hopefully things will change. :)

damn, I hope DJ Sammy will never get nominated! lol

Thanks :D

I didn't care too much for 18 or Moby's current line of political journal entries -- I just don't relate -- but Play is definitely a landmark. I got that puppy almost 2 years before it was big on MTV. He's commercial because he sells a lot but the tuneage on there stood out in a time where marketing was gray and all that word-of-mouth counts for something.

Not to mention BT cites Moby positively. Daft Punk have also contributed innovations with a unique, pumping filtered sound to the world of dance music, and their robotic image harks back to the Kraftwerk of old. And of course, the Chems and their sampling collages. All of these artists have been around for what amounts to several lifetimes in EDM. I couldn't put DJ Sammy up there in good conscience though -- catchy tunes, but where's the deeper sealife when you look past the surface of the water?

Name recognition is important, as well as familiarity with the music like it says in the article. How can you vote for someone you don't know? So hopefully they'll get the word out. ;)
