I read Survivor by Chuck Palahniuk(author of Fight Club) a little while ago. Excellent book, starts off slow but picks up halfway through. It's basically about the lone survivor of a suicide religious cult who is exploited by his agent and media and is turned into the next TV Christ. "The only difference between a suicide and martyrdom is how much publicity you get."

ANYTHING by Hunter S. Thompson is a GREAT read.

"Panic.....it crept up my spine like first rising vibes of an acid frenzy....." (fear and Loathing)
Kytracid
Ayn Rand - Fountainhead
Frank Herbert - Dune
Robert Pirsig - Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance
Ayn Rand - Atlas Shrugged

Just a few off the top of my head...

And for a little bit of nostalgia, anything by either Roald Dahl or Enid Blyton...ahh, childhood :)

Okay I am actually going to admit this....

Right now I am reading Harry Potter, the 4th book, and I am loving it (its the adult version at least). I mean its not an intellectually stimulating, but it really helps my imagination to grow, and I love the way its written.

An easy-to-read novel is okay once in a while, and all the Harry Potter books I have read are good.
Feel free to make fun of me. :D

Mordecai Richler - The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz
I recently read this, and really enjoyed it. Check it out for sure.

There are lots of awsome titles in this thread and lots of books to check out. I will have to agree all the HARRY POTTER books are absolutly amazing. Also check out THE BEACH (much better than the movie) and The Godfather (also better than the movie and that is a great movie to begin with. I will make a better list later.....:tongue2

And I thought I was the only one reading the 4th book. For the longest while I made fun of all my friends (many older than myself) who where into Harry Potter...but I finally gave in and decided to enjoy the series.

yes, the Beach is an amazing book. The movie makes so much more sense after reading it. I got it for .25 cents at a thrift shop, and now its one of my favourites. ;)

I've slacked on reading in recent years, but two good ones:

Perfume - Patrick Suskind (*exceptionally well written*)
The Thought Gang - Tibor Fischer (a bit deep, but with any philosophy background, it's interesting)
Skipping Towards Gommorah - Dan Savage (I love this guy, lol... hillarious, yet insightful)

If you're ambitious and looking for something more academic:

Defending Pornography - Nadine Strossen
Practical Ethics - Peter Singer
A Theory of Justice - John Rawls
Anarchy, State & Utopia - Robert Nozick

(all interesting reads, first two are not hard to get through at all, the second two are more academic)

One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest - Ken kesey

Wow guys, all of you have mentioned most of my faves!

The Alchemist is a topper.....cuz I am a wandering shepard sometimes.
Classics....JD Salinger, any Orwell, Rand, philosophy mind bender Zen and the Art of Mortorcycle Maitenence
Non mentions : Oscar Wilde (wit master), Umberto Ecco... ummm ill think of others when i get a memory back

Oya, Hunter is always amusing gotta give it up for his gonzo journalism.

Right now I got the world best seller for weeks finally in my hands...DaVinci Code as a bday gift from some great friends I have. Some people have called this book literary crack....mmm so good, can't get enough already.

Canadians......I love Canadian fiction....Mikey Ondaajee, Timothy Findley, Nino Ricci, jus started to give Atwood props (Handmaid's tale is riveting and scary)

Gotta check out some, Douglas Coupland (havent read anything of his yet, shame.)

So glad i've got a good book for my bday....reading Mixmags on the toilet isnt making a better thinker.
Quite opposite actually.
