Review: Brad Copeland & Sandra Collins at System

Wow, nobody has made this thread yet?
Well, I guess I can understand since Sandra Collins totally killed the vibe Brad Copeland had totally worked up... I reiterate, Brad Copeland is probably one of the most underrated DJs right now. I'm not a big fan of house and prog, but I can respect a good set.
Copeland did that and more. It's a shame the place was so empty, but even emptier after Sandra took to the decks... :rolleyes: Her tracks were all up and down... She'd build up to something and then drop it, then put some other mellow tune on afterwards?
Maybe she got a bit harder as time went on, but Copeland should have closed the night out.
Oh well, it was good to see a TA presence and a HUGE "Big Ups" to Malek for missioning down to meet up with us this weekend!

A boot to the head to that guy in the front room that said System F's "Out of the Blue" wasn't that good because it's not tribal or house <--- DUH! Obviously this guy is a complete moron :mad:
BTW, whoever that was spinning in the front room at like 4am and threw down "Punk (Kid Vicious Remix)" and "OOTB", awesome selections! ;) |

Well I agree with you about sandra collins' set. The beginning was very up-and-down, she'd play tracks and mixed them like oakenfold, letting them go all the way thru, which wasn't cool form given the style of music she was mixing, as it did waste all the energy of the previous track on the minimal parts of the next track. I've heard Sandra starts slow in her sets however, but due to my work scheduel I was unable to stay much past 4am. I heard a couple good tracks on the way out, and hopefully she got better for those who stayed later than I did.
As for Brad Copeland what can I say? I love this kid. There were really times I wanted to yell out and scream to brad in my approval, but he never let the energy or the beats down long enough for me to do so. I told John when I ran into him on the dancefloor that I'm so glad system picked him up, I just love what he spins and what he does. From his set last night you could hear the Montreal infused style with the driving tribal, hard house and the ever-present tech house. He had me going nuts for the entire time he was up there. I'm glad I'll have many more chances of seeing this guy now.
And Perrin, I can understand the guy complaining about the trance going on in the front room, he may have sounded stupid for his comments, but it is system soundbar, and friday nights are a house/progressive night. As for the crowd, I gotta say I'm not surprised it wasn't nearly as full as it usually is. Caribana wekend brings in like 1,000,000 people, most of them Americans, and usually that's enough to get us to head for the hills, myself not included, but I'm glad I had the extra room to move with Brad on the decks. I really wanted to see malek, as I thought it'd be rude not introducing myself as this guy missioned down from montreal to give us our CREAM tickets, but I'm sorry dude, I missed you. |

A bit late with the review, but here goes.
Brad Copeland threw down a perfect opening set, it had all the elements that leads me to believe his residency at System will be a very succesfull one. With a track selection that featured some of real gems in the progressive genre he build the energy up, getting the crowd involved as they lost control to the infectious beats Copeland was dishing out, track after track. With flawless technique, a good ear for layering sounds and a great feel for the crowd, he dropped everything from progressive house, to big room tribal tech sounds in route to a great debut set.
Then came Sandra Collins...and god, i wish she hadn't.
I guess no one reminded her, that when an opening DJ lays a solid foundation and amps the crowd up, you're not supposed to drop the tempo, and give em a breather for the next 20 minutes ! But that's precisely what she did, opening with a horribly boring track that seemed to go nowhere. Maybe it was me ( and i was sober btw ) but Copelands set had an energy you could feel through his track selection, Collins by comparision was pedestrian at best.
Thankfully, the back room had some solid breaks action, and that's where i took refuge during the moments that Sandra definately seemed to lose the plot. Maybe if Collins had opened for Brad ( Shock Horror...I know, Sandra Collins opening for Brad Copeland !), well maybe if she had, the entire night wouldn't have seemed like such an anticlimax.
As far as i was concerned, the night belonged to a certain Mr Copeland, with the breaks boys a very close second...then i'd have to say was the bar room DJ who spun some really execellent house tracks while we were waiting for the main doors to open. Oh, and collins was somewhere at the bottom of the pile.
3rd Time I've seen Sandra Collins perform, and that's definately a strike as far as i'm concerned. It's a shame a DJ who was once good enough to mix the Transport series wasn't good enough to rock System Soundbar.
Right, nuff bitchin about the DJ's...on the crowd, which was great as usual. There was definately less clubbers in system then on any other night, which is i'm sure a byproduct of the Caribana. Other then that, i'd rate the night a solid -- 7/10 for enjoyment.

| Brad's set was good, considering it was a warm-up.. I never heard Sandra before, so I was willing to give her a chance...the begining sounded promising..but at some point during the night the flow just wasnt there anymore, she totaly wasnt reading the crowd, as she started playing dreamy vocals song at the end...all in all, i was disapointed wit Sandra, but the crowd was better than average for a friday night..i still managed to have fun :tongue2 |

This was the first time I payed attention to Brad's set ... ok the dudes lives upto the hypes! Excellent indeed and welcome to System. Sandra played well, but Brad stole the show!

Sandra was disappointing.
Having heard "Sandra Collins - Perfecto presents (2004)" recently, i was really expecting a cool set, never happened: she was very inconsistent and un-focused.
Funny though, in a interview i recently saw, she claimed that she likes to tell a story with her sets, hence the slow start and then gradually building the pace and vibe and finally killing it with some epic trance (which she's frankly done with the CDs i've heard from her), but Sandra the story we heard on Friday was really F*@#ed up honey! :rolleyes:
anyways it was good to "finally" meet some TAs, special thanks to Sir John, Malek, High roller, Floorwhore, Chinaman and he rest of the gang i've missed.
p.s i was such an idiot , didn't listen to john's advice and hit yonge street to get home, oh man, what a disaster, it was horrible:
