Dont do a gap year is a stupid middle class excuse to fulfill a monotonous life and have something to talk about later on in life (when I was in Kenya...) |
I disagree. When I graduated from High School I went straight to college and totally blew my first year away because I didn't study and partied all the time because it was in my face every night. So I lost all my scholarships I worked so hard for in high school, spent two years living in an apartment, and went back to school and have the mindset now to accomplish my goals. Now I'm working towards my Ph.D., so taking time off was the best choice I ever made in my life. |

Exactly
I think after so many years of schooling, it is probably a good idea to get away from it for a bit, and do a lot (or little) just to relax, I've seen plenty more people for the break than against it |

there is a big difference between taking time off between school and uni, and taking a gap year.
A gap year is planned and scheduled. Some people even pay organizations like raleigh international to go and teach something in North Africa "for the experience" |

| so many people just waste their gap year, spend it in a backpackers somewhere not seeing the world and never having the money to do anything. My current plan is to do something similar to a gap year, but after working for 10 years or so, have enough money to travel well and see lots of the world. thinking maybe drive from london to 2010 world cup in capetown. I think it'll offer a lot more to re-ignite my spirits now than it would have out of school. |

Just to clear things up, a GAP year is not where you exclusively wear GAP clothes ;) :stongue:
As Ian said - it's where you take a year out between the end of school/college and Uni - in England after year 13, in America after highschool (don't really know your schooling system tbh)
The norm here is to go straight to Uni... but there are obviously advantages of taking a year out - you go to Uni more mature, and it's been proven that people who take gap years are more likely to complete their course because they're more determined.
But I think a gap year has to be well planned otherwise it can easily be wasted... and there's the problem of financing it before the ridiculous top-up fees for uni that our government have now introduced |

gap years in another country = great, i reckon
if youre just gonna defer for a year and work full time i dont reccomend it - unless you want to mature or something ... i've ruined my immaturity |

i think there is a bad trend with people that start working before going to college and then just never end up doing it and get stuck in a crappy job...
i know this guy who "took a year off from school" and now he's 30...living in his parents basement... |

I went to the US to study at a University there for one year, after Dutch high school. I had skipped a grade in middle school, so I was 17 when I graduated, which was the main reason not to go straight to University here.
I must say that I don't regret a single thing about going abroad (albeit studying and not backpacking or travelling around), it makes you a better person socially, as well as educate you, and of course have a really good time :D |
