Savas Pascalidis
Tommie Sunshine vs. DJ Unknown
The Dukes
Savas Pascalidis
Savas Pascalidis was born in Stuttgart/Germany in 1970. Inspired by his dad, a Greek DJ, and influenced by disco and early 80's music; he starts his career in 1985 as a house/disco/funk DJ in several clubsin Stuttgart. In 1988 he turns more acid and new beat - what was quite popular back then. From 1990 he played the first weekly
techno parties in Stuttgart and area and keeps spinning in many clubs. In 1994 he starts producing his own tracks .the first release was released on Affie Yussuf's label, 909 perversions: "The Power of music" and "Masterblaster", became underground hits.
OnThe Vienna cult label Loriz Sounds Savas released "Helter Skelter" a big underground hit which gave him a lot of attention by many Dj΄s in 1997. Richard Bartz hears about Savas Pascalidis and puts out "Sugarland Express" on "Kurbel records" a big hit - licensed in Brazil afterwards. Success and popularity are growing with more and more gigs in Germany and abroad. In 1998 the track "Discotheque" released on the "Kurbel Compilation" comes out like a bomb. The remix of Richard Bartz hits the Groove Magazine top ten list in the category "best remix of the year" and the track is played on the dancefloors all over the world.
In 1999 Savas delivers a great outline of his musical abilities including references to his disco/funk roots with "Sexomatic" also released on Kurbel. End of 1999 Savas Pascalidis creates his own record label: Lasergun records, the perfect platform for this particular kind of music. "Stellar Funk" and "Disco Galaxy" open the way to many successful releases.
2000 is a very prolific year. Savas remixes Sexual harassment's "I need a freak" and Superastronaut's "Dancing in outer space" which is strongly influenced by the 80's.
Three days of studio with Lab Insect end up with the ep "Venus" released under the name of "Universal Power". The "Cosmic Dancer" ep also comes out that year on Kurbel, after 12 months of hard work, offering a very well balanced mixture of Savas Pascalidis favourite styles 80's-disco-techno.
Follows a succession of carrying events. Savas hooks up with International Deejay Gigolo records and releases the "Space affair" ep that consolidates his growing reputation and makes him more and more appreciated by the crowd. He also produced remixes for Agoria and for Club MCM .
In 2002 Savas Pascalidis moves to Berlin. He releases the awesome "Galactic Gigolo" album on Gigolo records. The impact is amazing. His popularity takes off.
Savas plays every week; he gets a residency at Polar TV in Berlin and Lasergun records is one of the references in matter of record labels.
From January to April 2003 he goes on tour with Lasergun artists and plays in festivals such as Sonne Mond Sterne, Benicassim, Lowlands.
and more. He makes remixes for Luke Slater, Water Lilly and Binge and Purge; selects the tracks for the first Lasergun compilation and works on a new album.
With such a career and a very promising future Savas Pascalidis is definitely one of the main figures of the contemporary electronic scene...

1998 was the year that drove Hillary Snyder (a.k.a. DJ Unknown) to wear a paper bag on his head. The New York club scene had allen into a closed loop of Hip Hop, House, Techno and assorted Mtv approved ³Alt² styles. The raw, break out energy that once made New York a night clubbers paradise had faded to black. Dancing, deemed a crime through archaic NYC Cabaret laws put a strangle hold on what was left of that energy. Striking a pose rather than stooping to a base activity like dancing was always a preferred stance to take for the snobbery and nervous new comers. In short, the famed NYC night scene had become nothing more than an urban legion.
In an effort to slap the scene into consciousness, a good sight gag was in order. That and a couple of crates of records that reached for a mind set as opposed to a genre. The late 70's and early 80's in New York were nothing less than a cultural big bang. Punk Rock, Hip Hop, Ska, Disco, Reggae, Dance Hall, House, Techno, Hi NRG, No Wave, New Wave, etc. All energized by each other. Knowing the Pavlovian response he would get, Dj Unknown mixed 1 part NY underground with 2 parts Neo Electro. Around that time he was introduced to and became friends with Warren Fischer and Casey Spooner. After witnessing the legendary first performance of Fischerspooner at Starbucks on Astor Place, Hillary immediately offered to play as a side act. At that time there were no other DJs spinning electro-centric sets in NY. The partnership worked well. Fischerspooner's show was put in an appropriate context with Unknown's set and a scene started to take shape. Playing with a paper bag on his head, Dj Unknown soon had a cult following. People were more than ready for some humor and individuality. Originally worn as a comment on the state of the club scene and a nose thumbing to the dj fame game, the paper bag's ambiguous nature soon took on a life of its own. Apparently striking a nerve, four years later, Dj Unknown's bag gag has been adopted by the Belgian DJ duo 2 Many DJs. Having borrowed it himself from the Gong Show hero The Unknown Comic, Dj Unknown enlisted in the small but potent, Anonymous Performer Army. A Private in a private army you might say. Joining Nash the Slash, The Residents, Artists Unknown, Bucket Head and Kiss to name a few.
Since the creation of Dj Unknown, Hillary has gone on to Dj / Promote major Neo Electro nights in NYC. Including NY's first Neo Electro night called Nite Magic at Gavin Brown's Passerby Bar which still runs. The Atari / Commodore fetish night called Blip pulled together the fractured 8 bit fanatic scene for the first time. Featuring music and digital art all based on or dramatically influenced by early video games. Dj Unknown's set for the night might include original video game scores mixed with French House, Hip Hop, Electro old and new, Space Disco, Reggae, Techno, Dance Hall and anything else he could find that had incorporated the now famous SID chip sound as ear candy. The Profile Oscuro parties were a joint effort between Dj Unknown and the east coast record distributor team Safety In Numbers. Profile Oscuro's mission was to bring in Electro heavies from around the world who had either been neglected or over shadowed by the Larry T Electro Clash media blitz. Among them were Hong Kong Counterfeit, It and My Computer, Ed DMX, Carl Finlow and Crossover. In addition to these events Dj Unknown has continued to work as a side show with Fischerspooner. In recent years his instincts and record collection have turned him into a frequent flyer (see Recent Bookings Highlights List) and positioned him on club nights with the biggest names in the Neo Electro scene. In 2001 he was hired by Levi's as Music Supervisor on a series of 3 commercials. In 2002 Cornerstone Promotions commissioned him to introduce America to the NY Electro movement on Cornerstone Player #35. Dj Unknown has also been featured in GQ,Shout, IN, Self Service, L.A. Weekly, Vice, Foul, URB and Time Out NY.
"A paper bag carries lunch. A paper bag once lived in the forest. A paper bag keeps insects out.
A paper bag folds down unlike a lamp shade. A paper bag holds infinite space. A paper bag ripens avocadoes.
A paper bag is assembled by machines. A paper bag burns. My paper bag loves to do the Flava Flav and watch Invisible Man movies.
My paper bag is a dance aid device. My paper bag protects the public from my enormous ego. My paper bag suffocates Haters.
My paper bag lives in the moment. My paper bag deflects extra sensory spit wads. My paper bag tells really bad jokes.
My paper bag is always in style. There's a party in my bag..it's spilling into the streets." |

I'm very excited to be part of this event. Although this is tranceaddict, I've always been so impressed by the diverse musical tastes in this forum and those who have supported myself and the techno scene altogether. This night is new for Boa and new for the city. Finally, techno is going to be played and heard like it should be in Toronto!!
I will be playing a 2 hour set in the lounge alongside trevor and jeff who are both excellent, fun, funky DJs. I'm very much looking forward to the launch of CONVERSION and hopefully seeing some of you cats there. :) |

I seem to recall a certain blonde DJ chiding ME for being on a less than tasteful flyer....well this, in the "Fencing" world is what they call TOUCHE :tongue3
You know I'm kidding Skip........knock em dead and hopefully I can make the next one. |

ha ha Aaron!!
Do you take comfort in the fact that that's probably a man on the front of the flyer? :p |
|
|
| Form&Funktion |
The only thing I take comfort in is that the man on the front cover is not me.....because clearly my biceps are bigger LOL
Again, good luck.
p.s Where is the booth in the lounge? I've only been through there once and seem to recall tables set up kinda on the bar beside the bartender? |
|
|
| Skipper |
Yes, that's where it still is - behind the bar.
I like it actually - it gets more people up near the front. |

Trevor Isoprax Wilkes
Growing up listening to his Dad's 50's and 60's rock tunes he would play the air guitar when no one was looking and dance in his room like no one was watching (because of course there wasn't). Hating 'dance' music at the time he would never have guessed that he would be doing what he does now.
It all started with a few songs on the local dance station that he would overhear from time to time that didn't actually suck as bad as he assumed all dance music did. After secretly recording mix tapes and memorizing ALL the words to "Witch Doktor" he finally met someone else in High School who was going to parties in Toronto and asked if he could join him. From there it was a steady accumulation of ticket stubs, worn out shoes and of course music. Music that is now shared whenever and where ever people will let him
whether they ask for it or not.
Trevor has been the force behind another monthly techno night in Toronto, appropriately named "We don't suck." Titles aside, this night is now in its sixth successful run at Labrynth Lounge without having ever brought in an out of town DJ until August 20th. You can expect to hear anything and everything techy and groovy from Trevor during his set at CONVERSION. |
