here are my reviews... posted seperately cause I'm too cool to be with the other bunch ;). Note: look at the name of the track in en2t's first post and correlate to whatever track number it is.
*Disclaimer* : I speak from what I hear. I also try to balance between a mix between positive comments and constructive criticism. I think generally, I'm a bit on the more critical side so please don't be offended if i critiqued your track too much ;). Anyways, these were for the most part great remixes and I had a blast reviewing them all. Good job Everyone
Track 1:
Originality/Creativity: 10
Nothing groundbreakingly new... pretty standard for its type of genre... Gets a "neutral" score
Sound and Effects 33
>> Percussion 11
>> Synthesizer work (including FX) 22
Percussions have some nice panning and fx going on but other than that, it is your standard kick, hats and clap combo which isn't too intersting. Synthesizers however are what really shine in this track. Each synth fits nicely into the track and there are a good variety of sounds and lots of things to keep your ear interested. Nothing wrong with the synths, but just not good enough to earn itself 3 more points for a perfect score in the synths column.
Arrangement 34
>> Basic Layout/Structure 17
>> Final EQ/Mastering 17
Layout is pretty standard, but it works well. EQ and mastering is pretty well done, but just a tad bit shy from a true "professional" sound
TOTAL: 77
Great track. I admit, originally the first time I heard it, I wasn't really surprised or anything about it. But it's one of those tracks that the more you listen, the more you appreciate the good work in producing on this track. Loved it.
-------------------------------------
Track 2:
Originality/Creativity: 12
Slightly more original/creative than your standard typical track, but nothing really too new
Sound and Effects 30
>> Percussion 12
>> Synthesizer work (including FX) 18
Percussion are done well.. would have given almost perfect except I gave a -1 for the crashes which I just thought sucked =( and -1 because the other "filler" percussion was too soft and could be louder. Synths are better than average but not amazing. Bass is done pretty well but the other synths just aren't "awesome" although they are still decent. Some sound "preset-ish".
Arrangement 28
>> Basic Layout/Structure 15
>> Final EQ/Mastering 13
It flows. Usually I'm not fond when the last 16 measures or so is just a kick drum. Put some FX in it... Put some light percussion... Anything but a kick drum just playing. Even if you are mixing into another song, it is still boring to have a kick by itself. Final Eqing and mastering needs some work. Some parts seems mashed up together. Mainly the synths are the culprit for this in this mix. Things just need to Stand Out More. Just Like This Sentence.
Total: 70
I enjoyed this track. The main thing that needs to be worked on is making it seem more exciting. Right now seems uninspiring to me and the mastering and EQing needs some work. However, each part still fits nicely in the mix it's just that the EQing and compressing needs to be done more to make each part sit in nicely.
-------------------------------------
Track 3:
Originality/Creativity: 18
Very nice different vibe coming from this track... Lots of nice sounds coming from it
Sound and Effects 24
>> Percussion 14
>> Synthesizer work (including FX) 10
Bongos are cool! =) I like the mood the percussion sets the track. However, I think the synth work is not really good at all. Sounds like some cheap preset off some cheap synth.
Arrangement 22
>> Basic Layout/Structure 12
>> Final EQ/Mastering 10
Layout is ok... It does get boring after a while since there is nothing really new and the synths are just boring... Mastering and EQing could have been much better, and the synths are especially just cluttering up the mix.
Total: 64
I really liked the different vibe coming from this track, but the synths just killed this track. Parts like around 4:37 where the synths are soloed just don't sound that good. The percussions are kinda cool and was a definite plus in this track.
-------------------------------------
Track 4:
Originality/Creativity: 17
Sounds kinda dark and a bit tribal... Interesting!
Sound and Effects 28
>> Percussion 8
>> Synthesizer work (including FX) 20
Percussion sounds extremely fruity to me. I really liked the vibe from it, but it just sounded like the standard samples from fruity which doesn't sound that good. I don't really like the reverbed kick. Synths are quite dark and interesting. I would have given higher marks except it just has a bit too much reverb on it for my likings.
Arrangement 26
>> Basic Layout/Structure 15
>> Final EQ/Mastering 11
Interesting track. Good use of the vocals and keeps me relatively interested throughout. However, one thing that should always be carefully used is reverb. You always need to be VERY careful when adding reverb to instruments as it can be cluttering up your mix. In your track, I hear a deep rumble that basically goes throughout the whole track which i think comes from the reverb in one of your low bongos. This is not a good thing and can decrease the power of your kick
Total: 71
Original sounding. I really liked the dark feel to it. The main things that suffer from this track are percussion and mastering. Had more mastering and percussion work been done to it and fixing up the reverb, I would have extremely enjoyed it.
-------------------------------------
Track 5:
Originality/Creativity: 10
Ok, this just sounds very generic to me. Especially the synths. This has been done before, in like 1999. Try some new ideas!
Sound and Effects 29
>> Percussion 10
>> Synthesizer work (including FX) 19
Percussion is OK.. hats kinda sound wierd in my opinion and all over the place instead of keeping the beat flowing. Synths however, sound pretty good but nothing spectacular. I like the squelchy synth, but i just have a hunch that it sounds like a refx vanguard vst preset. Bass is very deep, but just a tad too deep. Needs a bit more highend to give it presence in the mix
Arrangement 27
>> Basic Layout/Structure 12
>> Final EQ/Mastering 15
Layout... I guess works for me... But nothing really special in my opinion. Mastering and EQ don't really have any gripes about it but I don't have any real praises for it. It works. One thing though is when the crashes come in it gets very loud on the high end and you have to watch out for that.
Total: 66
This track is about as average as it can get. It doesn't really shine in any areas nor does bad in any areas. Try some different ideas as arpeggiated synths are so like 5 years ago! Otherwise, a pretty good job with producing but lots of areas for you to work on to make it shine even more.
-------------------------------------
Track 6:
Originality/Creativity: 13
I think this track is really trying hard to be different from the typical trance. It is kinda working.
Sound and Effects 22
>> Percussion 10
>> Synthesizer work (including FX) 12
Bongos are kinda nice but just doesn't really fit and sounds repetitive. Rest of percs are ok I guess. I am really not digging the synths especially the bass. They are really annoying at parts.
Arrangement 29
>> Basic Layout/Structure 18
>> Final EQ/Mastering 11
The vocals don't really seem to totally fit the track... It still works, but could have done a better job of fitting into the track. However, one part I really like is how it builds up from around 4:55 and on and it just keeps building and building. Mastering could use some improvement. Basically, the thing that it needs the most are dynamics. I don't know exactly what you did but you seemed to have overompressed it causing a loss of dynamics in the track.
Total: 64
I didn't really like the instruments and percussion used but the layout was the part that shone for me. I think the best part is the build-up and it really does make this track very worthwhile. I must say though, the beginning before the buildup was kinda a bore to listen to.
-------------------------------------
Track 7:
Originality/Creativity: 17
Original not only because it strays from the typical expected genre that a remix of this track would be but some of the sounds are interesting as well.
Sound and Effects 27
>> Percussion 12
>> Synthesizer work (including FX) 15
I couldn't really see anything wrong with the percussion and it works nicely except for that kick (needs more bass to it and the reverb you put on it doesn't sound good). However, the synths are not that interesting to listen to. The bass is cool though... kinda groovy. The vocals I would have praised for some of the effects done to it except it's just way too loud.
Arrangement 24
>> Basic Layout/Structure 17
>> Final EQ/Mastering 7
The layout is pretty well, the vocals were too loud and annoying but I decided to dock marks in the synth department instead of the layout. Love the housey feel. Final mastering needs a lot of work though... Try to fix the EQing... Also, it seems that you did this track on some speakers or headphones that were very colored in the sound and caused you to exaggerate a lot of the middle frequencies and lack in high and low frequencies.
Total: 68
Good idea and feel to this track, but the mastering really killed it. Vocals really annoyed me. I really like the mood and I think if you worked on fixing up some of the things I mentioned it would definately be a mint chilled out track.
-------------------------------------
Track 8:
Originality/Creativity: 9
Lacks a lot of creativity... Doesn't sound like generic trance but doesn't sound too original either...
Sounds and Effects 29
>> Percussion 14
>> Synthesizer work (including FX) 15
Percussion is mint. Bongos sound really nice, things are nicely panned. Could have beefed it up a tiny bit but I'm just being nitpicky. Synths are kinda blehh to me. No interesting sounds at all. However, there ACTUALLY IS FX in this track! That deserves some credit as the other tracks that I've heard so far (not listening in any particular order) don't have any at all.
Arrangement 23
>> Basic Layout/Structure 5
>> Final EQ/Mastering 18
There are lots of musical "errors". For example the bass around 1:12 is playing a G and that synth on top is playing A and E later on. There is no chord with G and A, or G and E, or G, A and E unless you are talking about A7 or Am7 which do have all those notes but does not fit the rest of the track musically or chordally. Also, the vocals don't fit well, there are lots of wierd things that don't fit at all. Mastering however is done pretty well, levels seem to be good, there is a good balance between dynamics and compression.
Total: 61
The technical parts of this track was done well, the percussion, mastering etc... I just didn't find any musical creativity or any musical sense in this mix and mash-up of different notes.
-------------------------------------
Track 9:
Originality/Creativity: 14
The style itself isn't that creative, but the sounds and use of vocals are done quite well and original.
Sounds and Effects 29
>> Percussion 7
>> Synthesizer work (including FX) 22
There sounds there almost isn't a percussion except a kick. There needs some serious beefing up in that department. The synths are very nice. Each of the sounds are great and the piano adds a magical touch to it as well as the strings. Bass is really cool also
Arrangement 30
>> Basic Layout/Structure 17
>> Final EQ/Mastering 13
The layout is ok but I thought the different melodies were quite interesting and there were tons of interesting things about the track. Other than the frequencies above around 1000 hz, it seemed pretty good. However there is almost NO HIGH END! That's just something you have to look at. And look at it hard.
Total: 73
An intersting track and lots of wonderful intersting things going on but just lacked percussion and the high-end frequencies
-------------------------------------
Track 10:
Originality/Creativity: 15
Perhaps the weakest part of this track? And scoring quite high already it really doesn't make it seem that weak at all...
Sounds and Effects 34
>> Percussion 13
>> Synthesizer work (including FX) 21
Percussion is nice, not totally OMGIDIE! but works nicely and pretty interesting. Synths you can't really go wrong with what you did, and some sounds are really good. However, only the best things are perfect, and there are just some other things that you could have done to make it even more interesting.
Arrangement 35
>> Basic Layout/Structure 18
>> Final EQ/Mastering 17
Good structure, I was thoroughly enjoying the track, good energy, vibe, etc... *thumbs up*. Other than some parts being a bit too loud (7:10-7:11) I think the mastering was well done, had good EQ.
Total: 84
Great Producing. Good ideas. I loved it and listened to it many many times =)
-------------------------------------
Track 11:
Originality/Creativity: 16
Not really original, but has good sounding sounds ;)
Sounds and Effects 36
>> Percussion 13
>> Synthesizer work (including FX) 23
I love the clap.. sounds great. Hats need some more juice to it though. Synths are absolutely beautiful, almost flawless in my eyes. You could have used some more fx and if it weren't for that I would have given it a perfect or almost perfect score.
Arrangement 35
>> Basic Layout/Structure 16
>> Final EQ/Mastering 19
I hate to give such a low score to an awesome layout/structure when there is nothing I dislike about it except for the fact that it is not using the vocals enough for my likings to be a remix =(. Very good musically and everything flows well. Mastering is just awesome. Nothing else for me to say about that.
Total: 87
An awesome piece of work here. Almost flawless. Definately pro sounding. Everything is just magical. You are my hero.
-------------------------------------
Track 12:
Originality/Creativity: 10
Nothing really original... =(
Sounds and Effects 25
>> Percussion 5
>> Synthesizer work (including FX) 20
Percussion is not done very well... WHERE IS THE KICK? There is almost no power to it and it is way too soft plus it sounds like something like the C_Kick of fruity loops if I'm not right. Synths are quite interesting although nothing too special. The quality of it is much better than the quality of the percussion that's for sure.
Arrangement 21
>> Basic Layout/Structure 16
>> Final EQ/Mastering 5
Good layout and structure, synths are used well, good ideas. BAD BAD MASTERING! There seems to be very little attempt at it. Did you even EQ anything or compress anything or adjust anything for the sake of the overall mix? You need to listen more to "professional" tracks and try to listen for the differences.
Total: 56
I would have very much liked this track except the producing is quite amateurish. There is nothing wrong in being new and there seems to be a lot of potential for this if it was fixed up technically.
-------------------------------------
Track 13:
Originality/Creativity: 12
Quite typical of trance but with some interesting sounds out there.
Sounds and Effects 36
>> Percussion 13
>> Synthesizer work (including FX) 23
Percussion is OK in my eyes, nothing wrong at all with it but has a bit of room for improvement and really i don't have much else to say about it really. Wow, a person that used fx in his tracks. Really cool synth sounds and tons of cool stuff here. Really dig all the sounds that are here. If it sounded less "presetish" (Vanguard anyone?) then I would have probably given it an A+.
Arrangement 32
>> Basic Layout/Structure 16
>> Final EQ/Mastering 16
The layout works, quite interesting especially with fx filling in the "lesser" parts.. but just still could have been better. There needs to be more dynamics in the track and it sounds to me slightly overcompressed or something but it is lacking in dynamics and sounds flat. Also, I don't know what you did to it, but there is background noise in your track. If you are using hardware, you need to make sure you have good connections and a good soundcard and etc... If you used software, I don't see how there could be that sound but it's just there.
Total: 80
I enjoyed this beautiful track. A lot of things done very well and really nice synths. It just needs a tiny bit more polish to it, otherwise it is an awesome track.
-------------------------------------
Track 14:
Originality/Creativity: 10
It sounds a lot different. Is that a good thing though??
Sounds and Effects 15
>> Percussion 5
>> Synthesizer work (including FX) 10
Percussion umm... does it exist? Other than the weak kick and hats and random things there is like nothing almost. Synths are wierd, but the piano does deserve some points I think.
Arrangement 20
>> Basic Layout/Structure 8
>> Final EQ/Mastering 12
Almost no sense of structure. Vocals come in very randomly. Just too random. However, sometimes things do seem to fit kinda. Doesn't seem like much or any mastering was done to this, but the mix sounded ok to begin with and just lacking a bit of high end.
Total: 45
I'm sorry, I didn't really enjoy it =(. Things just don't seem to fit and there is a lot of random things here and there and it just feels wierd to me. There are some pretty interesting sounds though and listening to them was somehow a treat.
-------------------------------------
Track 15:
Originality/Creativity: 19
WOW!! Now this is what creativity is about ladies and gentelmen. It is just so uncliched and just so different but hella interesting.
Sounds and Effects 35
>> Percussion 14
>> Synthesizer work (including FX) 21
Almost flawless percussion. I'm being picky, but for that type of percussion, you just want to compress the hell out of it to get an absolutely hard sound which you are almost almost there. Synths are just cool. There are so many interesting things in here. Sometimes they are slightly too loud.
Arrangement 33
>> Basic Layout/Structure 18
>> Final EQ/Mastering 15
Other than the piano and strings feeling slightly out of place I think the layout is awesome and very interesting. Some extra care could have been used in EQing it however as there is an abundance in middle frequencies causing it to not be ear friendly at times. It is well compressed however and is very punchy.
Total: 87
Wow what an interesting piece of work. This track is just cool and screaming with it. The acid is kickass and rocks. I felt like I belonged in some kickass action movie after hearing that ;). Thank you for this. |

Downloading the tracks now :D Can't wait to hear this stuff!
Thanks to all the judges, and of course Stan for organising the whole shebang, its been a wicked opportunity to have your tracks rated and to get some solid feedback.
Hope I didn't torture you all too much with my track :toothless, at least its confirmed - I suck at mastering! (and percussion). Believe it or not it is better than it was, for me its probably the hardest thing to do, I still can't get that professional sound dammit. Hopefully next comp it won't be as bad

Well it's good to finally know who did what track. Is alphaDelta idv = ent2:conf: coz those synths were ing amazing. Oh well, whoever it is, if it was longer, I would have put it first EASILY(sorry JM):p

Track 1 neotune remix by Jay M: Total: 93
Putting this at no.1 was a tough choice. But overall it's a great remix. The synths are great,
all the percs have space to breath, the breakdowns/buildups sound wicked, and the track as a
whole just flows so well. Overall, the track's catchy and has grown on me. I like it.

The synths and pads are so ing beautiful. Easily the best in this comp. It's obvious this
person knows what they're doing. The overall structure of it was what lets it down tho. I was
actually thinking of making this No.1(and it was a hard decision), because it just sounds too
nice to not win. What lush sounding synths that just ozze ear candy, BUT, It's too short. At
only 5:15, it seems this was tracked in a day without any second thought of making it longer. I
Was left wanting to hear so much more.

Wow, a DnB remix. Not bad, but this is not the style of DnB I like. My ears just don't like the
lead synth and I think it sounds annoying, but I give you credit for taking a risk and trying
to be different. To sum this track up, if it was submitted in a DnB comp, it would finish off
being fairly ordinary and average.

Listen to any track and then listen to this. Can you hear the difference in levels? I actually
quiet like it tho. You have all the ideas there, but I just can't hear any of them. I know the
majority of people have trouble with mixing down & mastering, and it really is the only aspect
you need to work on, because every thing's there, just in a non-audiable manner. Overall you
have promise and some good ideas. Keep producing.

As soon as I heard the kick I grimmiced. What you need to do is sample a proffesional kick, get
it up to a good level, and then work your track around it. Sometimes I even wondered if this
track had a kick, but if I try and convince myself, I can make it out. Barely. Other then that,
the synths & percs need work but the structure is pretty good.

I don't know how you made those synths, but they sound really bad. Oh well, props for trying to

Track 6 Dj Kuco Afterclub Remix : Total: 48
This track needs more elements(I don't even think it has a bassline). And you can't just have
one sweeeping string playing through the whole track without expecting people to want to turn
it off.
