What is a white label, and what is it for? :conf:

A white label is a record who is made in a very limited quantity (just a few copies), and it is given to DJ's to play it and say their opinion on it.

Artists also use White Labels to see if the public likes their music or not (Tiesto Or Ferry Corsten Being a perfect example of this) It's a lot easier for a "Super Star DJ" to get every track they ever made played, but if Tiesto releases a White Label under the name "Small bears in the woods - Waterfall" And DJs scoop it up and it makes the crowds go nuts, they know it's the creative skill people like, as opposed to people saying "It's Tiesto, it's gotta be good"

Also, white labels are used to get away with Sampling without the consent of the original artist (Mikey Black's song Not Born Yesterday is a perfect example of this) because they're not "writen" by anyone, they're just out there, to be enjoyed by the public. hehehe.

Thanks a lot! Now I finally understand what DJ's talk about when they talk about white labels. I read on www.ferry-corsten.com that they sent out "Out of the Blue" as white label first. They only left a mobile phonenumber on, and it's written that after a week there had been a bunch of labels calling, so they just picked the best one.

hehe, I thought white labels was cd\vinyls from unsigned artists where the djs kinda lifted the cd\vinyls from the artist, playing it without the artist's permission, because he\she was unsiged. Kind of wrong image of white label, eh? :stongue:
