Interview with Eddie Halliwell...ripped from 4 clubbers...

Eddie Halliwell -

scratching his way to the top
A while ago I heard Eddie Halliwell play at Good Greef in Leeds. He was being hailed as the next big thing by Barry and Ben (the Good Greef promoters), and it seems like the lads were on the ball. Eddie went on to play at Raukous in Sheffield where he was spotted by Mark Foster the man in charge of the Tidy Trax DJ agency, and after wowing Mark and one Rob Tissera that night it seems like Tidy were very interested in this new kid in town.

So, who is Eddie Halliwell?
The guy sat here.

How did you start DJing?
Well, I got into clubbing through my brother. The first club I went to was Maxim's in Manchester, I was sixteen and I saw Tony DeVit play, it was amazing. My brother was really into clubbing and he convinced me to get decks and I just began from there. I was too young to go clubbing so just got into the music. I just started buying records and going clubbing with my brother, that's how it started.

How would you describe your style?
I play all sorts really the majority of my stuff is hard and energetic, it's banging and in your face. I guess I do play Hard House people always describe it as Hard House, and I guess it is Hard House but not as you see it today. You see my stuff covers stuff running at 135bpm running right up. It's like Thomas Bangalter, it's tough but funky, just not the way that Hard House has been stereotyped as banging hoover drive offbeat bass lines, my style isn't like that. I play funky, I play funky sets in my eyes they're funky sets but still hard.

What actually makes the Eddie Halliwell style though?
I scratch a lot, sometimes you can't scratch though say if the mixer is not right, or of course if the records are not meant to be scratched like say Funky House for example, or classics. I went down to check out some equipment in a club today and they were just not right. A mixer can change your style completely especially if you take the time to practice and you're put on a mixer that hasn't got the technical capabilities you need, to me instead of working the tunes you become a tune selector. If you get good equipment, a good mixer, then you can work the tunes, cutting them up making your own records out of the records you're playing. The equipment in a club really can limit you sometimes.

So where did your style emerge from?
Well when I practice, I practice to scratch using Hip Hop records, but I've never had the chance to play Hip Hop out, I have a large selection of Hip Hop but I just use it to practice. The thing is that Hip Hop doesn't have the energy I need to play out I have adapted my style from Hip Hop to the music I play in a club though and I do get a buzz off DMC style but I've just never thought of playing Hip Hop in a club, that's someone else's job.

So Tidy Trax, you're the new Tidy boy aren't you?
Well I never like to tempt fate and I don't find speaking of things that are about to happen easy. They've put lots of nice ideas onto the table, but I don't want to tempt fate. I will say though that I am bringing an album out on Oct 8th and it is called Disco Damaged, it will be slightly different it's music for people to listen to in their car, or when they are getting ready to go out.

Tidy Trax are also allowing me to keep the things I grew up with separate from the management, people like Good Greef you know. I deal with Good Greef I don't go out as Tidy property, that is so good because I feel that it is important to show loyalty to those that have helped me. I need to show support to those that have shown me support, this is something that Tidy have allowed me keep, they understand the loyalty question and know that I will show them loyalty too.

So how did your relationship with Tidy begin?
Well Mark Foster saw me DJing at Raukous in Sheffield and he asked to talk to me. It all started from there really. It's strange really because I just see myself as a tune mixer, people are always saying that my mixing style stands out or is different, I guess it comes from the Hip Hop as I said before. I train my hands every day, I do practice all the time for crabbing and rolling and stuff it helps me speed my hands up. Tidy just talked to me about my style because people in the Hard House scene have never seen the techniques used in Hip Hop, Tidy thought that it would be popular or something different for the scene. So I just keep practicing, keep doing my exercises, the equipment keeps getting better and I'll be practising for the rest of my life. Turntables have become instruments now, so I try to bring that in as much as I can. That's why a DJ can never justify his skill in a tape, it's just a selection of tunes mixed cleanly.

So you don't believe in making tapes for promoters and clubs?
I know that a lot of DJs make tapes and send them out but I truly believe that a DJ can never justify his skill in a tape. It's just a selection tunes mixed clean. I don't abide by the tape thing, taking time out to make a tape is good but take the time out and go and see the promoters. I've always tried to take one of my mixers and patched it through the system in the club before hand and tried to show people what I could do. If you go up to the promoters and do let yourself be analysed it shows balls, because you are constantly analysed in a club by people. Playing out is completely different to doing a tape, some great DJs never make tapes, some great tape makers could never play in a club. They freeze.

Which clubs would you like to play at?
Well from being a clubber I always used to go to Godskitchen at the Sanctuary and I've always wanted to play there. I've managed to play Sundissential in the main room at the Sanctuary, so… I used to go to Garlands and I've played there. It's all just got out of hand really people have put their belief in me and put me on their bill to play, I'm just so amazed by it all. Clubs that I used to go to from a young age I've played at, Sundissential, I used to be Sundissential mad and I've played there.

People always come out with comments to burst the Hard House bubble and it is always expected to be reaching the end of its road. Do you think that Hard House will need to change in order to survive for much longer?
I don't see Hard House getting Harder for example, that would just be Techno right? I can't see it getting harder it is going to get tougher. I see it going in all different directions, tougher, funkier. But music in general will get tougher Hard House has opened up that new side of clubbing up. Clubs have opened up a kettle of fish really because if a club has an up for it atmosphere then they can't really drop it back down so they have to keep it hard, up for it. But I just think that the majority of music will get tougher. People are always saying that Hard House is going to die but I think what is going to die are these clubs playing Hard House from 9 until 3 or 4 o'clock in the morning. These things always go in sections, people said that Trance was going to die but you still get lots of Trance DJs. Clubs still have Trance DJs playing and this will happen with the Hard House DJs, people will always want a couple of hours of Hard House in a night. There are a few clubs that promote Hard House solely and they won't last, only big clubs like Sundissential will last because they've already made themselves. But these smaller clubs will fade out, because as far as I can see all the big boys have already made themselves in the Hard House scene. I think there needs to be a new wave now a new scene.

So what is the next move for Eddie Halliwell?
Well I'd love to move into producing, but everyone says that. Tidy are putting forward a few ideas on the production side. I've done a bit in the studio before, and I studied a music technology course. I started out as a DJ though and I decided that… well if you're going to split your time in two directions then those directions will only get fifty percent of your time, and so both will be losing out. I've decided to concentrate on my DJing, but being taken onto the Tidy Management means that I can sit in there studios with an engineer, so that possibility is amazing! The Tidy people are such nice people as well Mark Foster is sound as a pound, they're all so laid back and relaxed it's great. Other agencies approached me, but I've got friends at Tidy now Jez and Charlie, Mark Grey the rest of the lads they're all great. Working with people that you get on with is half the battle isn't it? And Tidy showed an interest in my funky side they didn't just want me to be a Hard House DJ, it's all good at the moment really.

Gig wise I'm going to be going to South Africa with Tidy. Sundissential have booked me for some gigs, Good Greef… you know I can't actually believe that all of this has actually happened it's all just happened so quick. I really feel blessed. I'm not going to go diving into anything though, I want to keep the funky side going as much as the harder side of things.

It would be interesting to see what such a young DJ could advise any other up and coming DJs.
People that support me are the ones that have enabled me to receive this break, I need advice just as much as up and coming DJs I'm still here I'm still confused, I don't know. We could all do with some advice.

So we left it there. Eddie Halliwell will be releasing his first album on the Tidy Trax label on October 8th, he's just played Tidyssential, is now a monthly resident with Base in Nottingham and will be playing at a Sundissential near you soon. Looks like this is one kid that will not be the new boy for long!
