Apparently PvD had some sort of oral surgery and wont be able to attend. I wonder if that means that Digweed will play a longer set ? |

Well, since nobody has stepped up to do a review, I guess I can. We skipped Sat, but went Sunday. Talked to some people who saw Digweed and some liked it / some did not. It all seemed to depend on what style they liked.
BT cancelled last minute. He was replaced by Monk.
Picotto was bangin'. He looks younger in real life to me at least. He mixed in nicely to the orginal club version of Blue Monday and ended with some great techno songs, I don't know techno too well though.
Ferry, well, he never disappoints. The set up was in a tent. The system there was loud but a little distorted IMO. The lasers were pretty decent. It was nice to see all the colors. It was great to see that Ferry had a good amount of fans at Voodoo. Ferry did get the crowd going right away. Many were chanting Ferry through out his set. I did not know his opening track but we found out later: Rapid Eye - Absoulte (i think). When we were talking to him, you could tell he was worn out from the past several nights. But he went out of his way to talk to his fans and take a few pics even though security was getting everybody out. He played a cool remix of In a State - UNKLE with no vocals, but still had the guitar. I recognized the incoming melody right away, but had never heard that version before. It turns out it was an Oakenfold remix. He did not play Force of Gravity as I would have expected, maybe he was upset at BT not being there.Haha
The crowd went nuts when he played Gouryella - Ligaya. I don't know if it was a different remix or not. He also played that new remix of Synesthasia (sp?) by Thrillseekers, I think. He played some Marco V song, not Del mp3. It was a short set. Toward the end he played right of way, it's time. He encored with Rock your Body and the played a few minutes of Punk before fading it out, I'm sure at the security's insistence. He made price of admission worth it. My girl thanked him for coming to New Orleans and he seemed very happy about it. One negative was that you could barely see the DJ spinning due to the lighting. All you could see was a shadow or a silohuette. So you could not really see him smiling or gesturing or even raising his hands, even if you were upfront. But you could still feel the vibe and it was great. |

WHAT A FK'N WEEKEND! I had a blast. This was by far the best music event I have ever attended.
We got to New Orleans on Friday the 15th. We got there at about 11 pm and headed out to Bourbon St. and had a couple of drinks and checked out the ladies. If you guys are ever on Bourbon St buy a drink called a handgrenade @ The Tropical Isle. Trust me this thing does the trick. :crazy: So anyway we participated in various Bourbon St antics then headead off back to the hotel @ about 6 A.M.
On Sat the 16th we headed off for the Voodoo Fest early in the afternoon. We caught a couple of acts like Sugarcult, New Found Glory then we went off to check out MIX MASTER MIKE. OMFG DOES THIS MAN HAVE SOME SKILLS! Then we headed off to check out Talib Kweli. After that I had to make a decision if I should see Digweed or Green Day after much debating we decided to go check out Green Day. We can always check out Digweed some other time. Green Day were teh highlight of the night for me and Dave and I jumped in the mosh pit during BASKET CASE ! The guys put on hell of a show. Anyway after Green Day were the Beastie Boys and Mix Master Mike. The crowd was so hyped after seeing Green Day and it just carried through well into the Beastie gig. :crazy:
Sunday the 17th:
Headed out to the festival late in teh afternoon and checked out De la Soul. Afterwards we headed off to check out what we though was going to be BT but we were dissapointed to find out that BT was not going to be there. :( So the rest of the guys chilled to wait for Mauro Picotto and Ferry gigs. I on the other hand went to see VELVET REVOLVER! This was a really tough choice but VR was the one band that I just HAD to see. :disbelief VR were absolutely amazing! It was the 2nd night of their tour and they were excited as hell to be there. The crowd went absolutely nuts! SLASH IS A GOD ! After VR was Kid Rock so I didnt stick around for that one. I went to check out Ferry Corsten and of course he never dissapoints.

Joel pretty much summed up the trip for us...but here is my 2 cents:
On day 1, I was really torn between Green Day and Digweed. I had never seen Digweed before and really wanted to see him play, but Green day was the victor. They played an awesome set and entertained the crowd to no end. They totally owned when they covered Queen - We Are The Champions. People had lighters going and hands were swaying and it was just awe inspiring. Then Joel and I kicked some ass in the pit. had to balance things out. Beasties played a hell of a show and Mix Master Mike was educating everyone on turntablism. The man is a living legend. Big Props to New Found Glory as well. I had never seent hem before and was impressed.
On Day 2, we went straight to see De La Soul. I wanted to leave a bit early to see BT and ran into my friend Blake (Sir Jackson) from Austin. I almost crapped my pants. It was good to see him. Well, he told me had seen Monk at Ampersands on Friday night and I didn't pay much mind to it till I saw Monk up on stage. I put 2 and 2 together and told Joel that BT cancelled. He took off for Velvet Revolver and I stayed to check Monk out. He started off with some Hard Techno and played a bit of everything before finishing with some really evil Drum n Bass. I really enjoyed his set. After Monk, people took off and I was able to stand right in front of the DJ booth to see the main reason I drove 9 hours to New Orleans...Mauro Picotto!!! I didn't really see anyone giving the man his proper respect so I started some Mauro chants and made sure he felt welcome. He seemed kinda surprised that people in the crowd knew who he was. He proceeded to rinse the system out with some Techno and I seem to recall at least 2 Trancey songs. He did play a couple Tech House tracks, but did not disappoint in the least. I don't think many people really understood how much of a treat it was to see Mauro, so I may have looked a bit foolish jumping up and down pumping my fists like a madman, but the man deserves it. He waved at me as he was leaving and it made me feel good to know he ackowledged me paying my respects to him. Then Ferry came on and played a good set as well. I made sure we chanted for him as well and when he played Mirco de Govia - Voller Sterne, I motioned to the record, clapped my hands and threw him a thumbs up. He laughed and concurred that the track was major choonage. All in all, I loved his set, but other than Voller Sterne, nothing really impacted me as I had heard most of the tracks before. My satisfaction came more from seeing Mauro and Ferry in the flesh working the tables than what they were actually playing. Ferry could play an old DeBarge track and I would be happy, which reminds me of Mauro playing New Order - Blue Monday (OLD SCHOOL!!!). Good sets by all DJs and bands.
After the show, Joel, myself and some friends proceeded to get more drunk at Bourbon St. When we were leaving, I saw Monk and walked up to him to pay my respects. I told him he played a really good set and that I was sorry to have missed him in SA, but that I made up for it that night. He thanked me for the compliments and we drove back to the hotel to rest for the long way home.
