| well if u are going into just audio, the field sux do to downloading. If u are an engineer expect to work 80 to 100 hours a week and not get paid much at all. I want to to the more post production side of things, dvd, cd roms, games, radio advertisment, commercials, and etc. I love music but the industry has turned to , which is good for its ass for charging people $20 a in cd, maybe if they were cheaper then true music collectors like myself would buy them. Im just curios to know if anyone here does web design or anything similar for a living. |

| Just finished school for Motion Graphics and 3D Animation. My friends and I have now started our own small, pretty well rounded production company. |

Math? You talking about money or crunching numbers to make something in 3D, cause that's changed a lot. 3D apps these have become very much oriented for the artist over the mathmetician. As far as education, its pretty limited here in Colorado. The most noticable would be the Colorado Institute of Art. But its expensive and you don't have much freedom to find your niche.
For me, after some research, I found an equal education and access to resources at Red Rocks Community College. But since they only offer associates programs, I had to finsh my BFA at DU. Saved a bunch of money and moved along a lot faster than the people I've known that had gone to the Institute.
Closer to Louisianna would be the Savannah School of Art and Design in Georgia. There'd probably be as much freedom as Colorado Institute, but they offer a great deal more and has a good deal of access into the professional industry.
Anyway, the company is ok. Getting some stuff done but no exposure yet (and no money). Pretty much out of pocket so far. But its still early for us and we'll be getting some stuff on the web soon. Hopefully that will help. |

| I don't mean to disappoint you but the computer industry is over saturated (IT to web design). Like any field if you're the cream of the crop you'll find a good job. If you're average you'll struggle to find a job and will end up settling for one even if its grunt work. Working for yourself allows you artistic freedom but, its really a challenge and stressfull making a living. |

I absolutely agree. We in no way plan to bust out as the next rival to Pixar in our lifetimes. We just want to create. And as a group, it can be done much better. I'm only 23 now, so I've deffinately got to pay my dues to make something of myself, but sometimes you have to make your own experience. Money isn't an issue right now and I've still got my day job.
For now we're having fun. |

I personally am loving it. But it takes time.
It would probably be the same going any other direction, though. You'll have to work at it as much as you would and some dead end office job. You won't get the position you want right out of college. You'll probably start out interning ( ) at PBS or something small and working your way up. You'll learn techniques in school that you most likely won't use. but they'll be good to know. Don't be afraid to take on crappy, boring jobs. Promote yourself. Try some freelance stuff and build a solid demo real. The experience will get you farther than just the education deffinately, because one way or another you'll still be learning.
It's an area thats constantly growing. There is more interest in it now than ever. And now traditional artists are making the move in that direction because of its growth. I started out from a high school fine arts background, not really knowing what I wanted to do, got drawn into multimedia, tried to learn as much as I could in all kinds of areas, and came out favoring 3D animation. In that process, aside from 3D, I've become skilled in with film production, video editing, post production, compositing, color correction, and sound and music production, as well as the basic Photoshop, Illustrator, Quark Express, and print production. Multimedia is a huge area. You can get a lot out of it and it will keep up with the pace that technology is moving.
And for me, right now, its a bit hard because I want to create something of my own. Every job I take is just something to keep me going and working on my stuff in my spare time. And in that respect you may have to be the starving artist to keep going and getting your work out there.
On the other hand, Post Production is a much larger area than people think. There are a good deal of choices for that line of work. So I guess it just about how hard you're willing to work to get where you want.
P.S. I recently sold the 3D pic in my sig for $100. |

| Also check out www.cgtalk.com some time. Its a large community of all kinds of graphic artists. Students, amatuers, and pros. They're always puting their work up and they're good people to talk to, or just to bash bad CG movies with. |
