I was thinking of buying an Mp3 Discman, and some guy came up to me and told me that soon people will stop using mp3's because there are now mp4 files that take less filesize and have better quality (??!)

was he bullting me? :p

nope he was telling you the truth about mp4...it really does take up less half the space and has better quality..though they havent mass released it yet and youll need an mp4 player to play the files but i dont know if people will make plug ins for winamp or whatever people wont stop using mp3s though because theres so many of them there will be massive amount of files to convert and that doesnt make sense

Dude, I was thinking of doing the same...now I don't know. Even if mp4's come out though it may take them awhile to spread cuz people are so familiar with mp3's but I could be wrong.

BTW, how much was the discman you were looking at? The one I saw was $100 US.

a plug in for winamp?.. no, they will probably get a winamp version that supports mp4.. i cant wait.. cause im on 56k and as file quality gets higher, so does the file size, but if this is true about the better quality and smaller size.. ill be happy to try it out

well before the mp3s...it was the widespread of wav. files...

Well, the only advance to mp3 I know of is mp3 pro. They seperate the higher frequencies from the lower frequencies and compress them seperately, thus a file encoded with mp3pro at 64 kb is the same qualitiy as an mp3 encoded with 128 kb but (as it`s only 64 kb) it`s only half the size. I encode all my mp3 with it. There is also a plugin for winamp so can listen to mp3 pro files with normal winamp.

I love this system although there`s only a demo released yet (encoding at 64 kb -> 128 kb normal sound) the quality is amazing.

Check it out at: http://www.mp3pro.com

the only mp4 i ever heard about was in reference to movies...things like divx and what not b/c it allowed a greater quality with less size...you could fit a whole movie on one cd...and im not talking about dvd's...im talking rips of movies...on regular cds

mp4/aac audio does exist, it is smaller than mp3 - BUT not better quality. I've followed this for years. There are these things called 'industry norms'. Industry norms are things like vinyl, CD's, cassette tapes in the 80s, and mp3s now. Things that fall out of the loop are 8-tracks, personal DATs, minidisc (in the USA), and mp4.

Forget about it - its not a significant enough difference to catch on.

Buy the player.;)

i will definitely say buy the player (especially if it's rio volt or avc soul or i-river) because they all have a firmware upgrade . dude don't worry just buy it , it's really worth it

MP4 compression also requirers higher CPU cycles so you will need higer end decoding hardware to decode on the fly. That would mean portable MP4 players would cost more. Besides, MP3s are so widespread that MP4s will not become the norm for a long time. And with the widespread use of broadband connections who really cares how big MP3 files are? When you are on a cable line and can d/l 600 MB an hour, why would you worry whether an mp3 file ie 4 megs vs 8 megs? :D And yes, MP4 is no better sound quality than MP3s.

MP4 is not higher compression. It is an extended audio format with builtin extra features (like lyrics) that is supposed to be next-gen. Just like MPEG7 is not higher video compression (notice the number skip from MPEG4 which is the best vid compression out there), it just has additional DVD-like features built into the format. Hope this clears things up.
