lo-fi choir sound

I can't think of another way to describe it :)
I've got several choir samples but all are much too pristine. I don't have a clip, but the general sound i'm looking for is the choir/pad sound used by Above and Beyond in their Ayumi - M remix.
How can I make this sound? :)
I've tried simply lowering the bit rate on my samples but thats.....really ghetto, and doesn't sound right.
Thanks! |

Thanks for your tips. I tried using the Bitcrusher plugin included with Logic though it seems to just introduce alot of noise into the sound....gives it more of a massive digital overdrive sound. Its an "improvement" i.e. closer to what I'm after, but not all the way there.
I'm probably just at a loss of words to describe exactly the sound, though anybody who has Ayumi - M (Above and Beyond Remix) can hear what I'm going for. |

| Actually, another song with a sound like this if I remember correctly is trisco - Muzak (original mix). However, I haven't heard this song in months or even years so I could be wrong! I remember a lo-fi choir in it though... |

| absynth 2 has a preset for digital choir type sound, its really good its more of a pad sound so you might try checking it out. its in the factory presets |

Generally, I use my Waldorf XT in order to make choir pads, lo-fi sounds and other effects. Waldorf XT has interesting features to dirty up any sound, like:
1. weird and amazing filters: Waveshaper (12dB LPF->wave-shaping filter); FM filter (Osc2's output modulates the freq); Sample and Hold filter (lower the sampling rate of the signal before routing it through a low-pass 12dB filter); SinX>12L (shaper with a sine function->12dB LPF) - this one is cool for crazy basses.
Of course, there are the normal filters: 12/24 dB LPF.
2. External signal input to filters and effects (effects are horrible).
3. Wavetable synthesis with unison/detune/osc sync/ring mod/FM etc. capable of the incredible (digital) evolving sounds, and if you want, extremely lo-fi sounds like the 12 bit's samplers (granular, you know). But it can emulate nice analog sounds as well.

Oh, Absynth is very very interesting and can make amazing sounds. |

Thanks for the tips guys. What is the name of the choir preset in Absynth? Is it in the Absynth demo?
I'd love a Waldorf XT...but I'm about spent on hardware for the moment. I suppose if I start playing with Absynth I'll end up buying it, and its not cheap... |

Tupsox, yesterday I was testing the Cubase's BitCrusher VST with pads from Supernova II (double saw synced with HP filter) and I think it worked fine. Try it! Don't forget some filter VST with fast and crazy modulation (cutoff). Maybe I make some demo clip, ok?

I'll play with the bitcrusher some more tonight....i've got a Novation Nova so theoretically I should be able to get what you're getting :)
Post a demo clip when you have time, I'm curious |

Ok,
I've uploaded my clip demo to SoundClick:
http://www.soundclick.com/bands/5/sonikakbmusic.htm
Available tomorrow, but I think it's possible to listen in lo-fi mode for while... (not EQing yet!)
Kick = made by Sirocco (the best kick set I've ever listened)
bass = SH101
pad = Supernova II
lead = Supernova II
String = Waldorf XT
BitCrusher + Ohmforce Ohmboyz |
