Hey all,

How do you go about getting new sounds and samples to use? Are they mostly made with hardware? If so, which hardware is the best for creating new sounds? Are they obtained through sample cd's? If so, could you point me in the direction of some good ones?

I'm really getting quite adept at using Reason, but I'm having the most trouble getting the sounds in my head to come out in the program. Any tips on this? Or should I just keep playing with it until I start getting better at making the sounds I need?

Thanks in advance!

There are sample CD's for you to use... goto www.maz-sound.com
I think... they have some samples for you but most of the samples I'm using are made using Hardware and Sound Forge and as a Reason user, you know that you can create your own sounds using the Subtractor :)

If you need any more help, feel free to ask...

As great of a program as Reason is, unless you're writing really techno influenced hard trance, I don't think Reason is enough on its own to write decent tracks. (Unless you're planning on working with alot of samples, which binds you to writing in the key the samples are written in, and matching up keys is more trouble than its worth.) My suggestion is if you can't afford some good hardware, look into some VST instruments like Wave PPG or Pro-52 and a sequencer like Cubase or Logic (if you can't pay out for those, try Cubasis which is a scaled down version of Cubase at ~$100) and some VST or DirectX plugins. Those will give you a pretty large palete of sounds. Or you can pick up Reaktor and sequence that with Reason. Reaktor can make all kinds of badass sounds.

keep going till you get better. And don't be afraid of trying something else. Try to create sounds without too many thinking and look what's hapenning. Check my song out. If you want more of my tracks or need help with programming any melodies or basslines, contact me at [email protected], leave there your MSN address so we can discuss it all via Messenger service, don't forget to add me to your contacts.

Well......

I've been producing for five years, first as a amateur, now as a pro.
If you send my a mail, then i can give you acces to my FTP, wich contains all the samples you need!!

I produce my samples with my 3!!!! drumcomputers, and then I edit them in my sampler. Maybe this is a little answer how samples are produced.

Thanks! That would be great. I PM'ed you my email address.

I've been spending the past couple weeks trying to come up with sounds and trying to learn how the knobs on the synthesizer change the sounds. I'm starting to pick it up, and I realize that it's something you have to train yourself to do. Still it's tough to get the sound that's in my head to come out. I suppose that will take some more time.

Look for some of the Club/Dance/Trance labelled Reason refills. Some are really good, some are complete . But you'll find the sounds you are looking for in those.

I've been using software since I started producing several years ago. I started in Impulse Tracker (an old DOS based sample sequencer) and progressed to Reason. At each stage of my "producing career" I found myself getting frustrated with my resources. I mean, as good as Reason is, I don't think there's a sound card for a common consumer, like you and I, that has the power of putting out the full, rich sounds that actual hardware can create. Unfortunately, this hardware is very costly and not affordable to most of us. The vicious cycle begins because one can't create the quality of music that labels are looking for without the quality equipment that other producers are using. It took me a while to figure out that the ones with the hardware are the ones that have taken more of a risk... because they've realized their passion is in the music industry. It's taken me a while, but I know I'm now ready to take the plunge and finally get the things I need to make the music I've always wanted.

The moral of the story here is that it's taken me several years of forcing myself to use what I could get my hands on to make music... period. I've struggled and I've given up time and time again because "the sounds in my head aren't coming out right when I put them into the computer"... but I still go back... and I do my best to finish what I've started. I may leave a track for 6 months to a year before I go back to work on it again because of my frustration, but I usually get around to it and I end up with a great song, but it's not as great as it could be. This says one very important thing to me: My passion is to create and play music. Now, it's time to reward myself, take the risk, and jump in... because there's nothing that drives me in this world like music. [/sappy-cheese] But it took me a long time to realize this.

Take your time man... the best way to get better to to try new things.. frustrate yourself.. make mistakes.. try new styles, beats, percussions.. make tracks about something important to you and about things that have affected your life personally.. None of the tracks I've produced up until now will ever be pressed to vinyl, but each track means something different to me. I look back and I can see my evolution and growth. I can see my influences in past tracks. I can see how the scene has evolved and changed with the times and thus create my path thereafter. These are the important things you'll appreciate down the road when you too are ready to take the plunge... just hang in there and pay your dues, and it'll all pay off in the end :)

Ok ok... really I'm not so cheesy... but I've been down the bumpy road he's on right now and I always wished someone was there to give me some advice!!! hehe
