What in essence determines a DJ's skill level? Simply mixing? Different styles of EDM require different mixing, some longer/some shorter. John Digweed is one of the best in terms of mixing (I can hear songs coming in for like 2 minutes) but overall the songs he chooses put me to sleep. So is then choosing the cuts the most important? What exactly is the nature of the DJ? To get people to dance and have a good time? Obviously what songs he picks is pretty damn important. What about production? A DJ that actually makes a successful song that is played by other DJ's also have to warrant some points. What about remixing other songs? What about overall vibe at a venue? What about consistency such as having to pick an inordinate amount of new songs every week on a radio show?
There is more roles of a good DJ but I don't to go into every one...
In essence, isn't it the job of the DJ to be popular, to be liked by his crowd? If he isn't popular, he's out of a job right?
They should have a separate category for the most technically proficient then. My vote would go to James Zabiela. However, his CD's don't really do it for me so the best overall DJ he is not (for me anyway). Live he was awesome though!

Well, shouldn't you NOT include his mix cds? Because there are some DJs who don't make mix cds and that gives him/her an unfair advantage in your voting. |

This argument can go on forever but two things you should not base your vote on are a djs production status (producing a few big tracks doesn't mean you can dj as well...djing is an art in itself...way too many true djs are looked over cause they dont have a big track under there belt) and his/hers mix compilations (99% of the comps on the market are mixed together in pro tools...so that really does not give you a true idea as how they mix live). |

I can only reference DJ's that I've heard. I should make it clear taht I'm thinking about live sets that I've downloaded, plus his CD I bought, or whatever. I mean for total DJ, encompassing all the traits to be my top DJ, he doesn't measure up. If I was just basing it on technical proficiency, then he gets it (from what I've heard live + CD + live mixes). However, I'm surely not an expert and we all have different tastes. Perhaps then there should be a poll ranked by fellow DJ's in regards to technical skills....
Likewise, when they announce Tiesto they could say "introducing the world's most popular DJ for 2003" but I think that's implied with the DJ Mag poll already by people who like the music anyway. I bet he wouldn't quibble about that...
Furthermore, I'm basing it on the year 2004. For me, there is no lifetime achievement award. Surely past successes predicate present values I place on a particular DJ, but the deciding edge goes to what they've done this year.
Anyway, that's enough out of me.. yeesh!! |

Although im a big tiesto fan, i beleive hes really doing it mainly for the money now and hope that he doesnt repeat as numero uno this year and ends up oakenfolding himself into oblivion. |
