Groeten uit Amsterdam!
(interesting that Altavista gives me a different translation that what I've seen on postcards... anyways...)
If anyone is curious and cares, here's what's been going down for me...
Been having a terrific time here, and I've been doing it clean and sober. :p
I have had more Heinekens than usual though :)
At Mysteryland, I waited in line at the gate for almost an hour. After that, it took me 45 minutes to find all the stages. The last one that I found was the Black Hole tent - too bad that happened right after Robert Gitelman finished.
I spent most of the time at the Black Hole tent, where I saw Ton TB, Mojado (doing a live PA), Mark Norman, Cor Fijneman, Rank 1 (DJ set, by just one of them). All were great. I saw someone there wearing GTA t-shirt, but I didn't have a chance to talk to him.
At the main stage, I saw a little of each of the following: "Paul van Dijk" :D, Tiesto (who was brought in by helicopter), Benjamin Bates, Moguai, Darren Emerson, Johan Gielen. Marco V closed there, and I heard a little of it, but I didn't see him. During the daytime, some parts were muddy, which made things interesting. Also made it easier to go up to the front.
On the ID&T Radio Live Stage, I saw Don Diablo perform with a band(!) and his set included a hip-hop track, with rapping done by a white guy :p
Tim Deluxe also did an act with a band (different style from Don Diablo's), and I caught a little of Junkie XL at the end.
When I left, all of the stages were pretty well filled, including the ones that didn't have big-name DJ's (at least whose names recognized).
There were some sick lights (including flames that shot up out of the main stage for 5-10 minutes), but it didn't get dark until around 8:30 pm, and the event ended at 11 pm. I left around 10 pm, to catch the train back to Amsterdam.
It's remarkable how much of a crowd there is for hardcore - 180+ bpm kind of stuff. On the way out, I saw the Q-dance stage, and that place (probably comparable to the main stage ampitheater at ULTRA) was packed to the hilt.
Drinks were sold starting at 10 euros for 5 tickets - 1 ticket will get you soda or water, 2 tickets will get you booze.
Food tickets were sold in strips of 5, each for 5 euros. 1 would get you fruit, 3 would get you fries, burgers were for 3 or 4 , 6 would get you Nasi Goreng.
Cool that they had lockers at the entrance.
I read somewhere that cameras wouldn't be allowed, so I didn't bring my digital camera. Too bad, since I later saw some people with their cameras. I hope that the pics I took with the single-use that I bought there come out decently.
AstralNrg, rudEgirl: Did you make it out there? How was it for you?
Other events I attended:
Fri - a DJ contest at Cafe d'Trapisse, a small bar but with a good amount of dancing space. The featured style was harddance - all that I remember of the tunes played were stuff like Yoji Biomehanika and Nukleuz Records.
Sat (after Mysteryland) - Xtra Large at Kingdom, where I saw DJ Astrid, Spider, and The Freak. Astrid played nice trancy progressive, and ended her set with a nice trance remix of Southern Sun (sounded like the style of Johan Gielen, but I'm not sure). Nice venue, whose layout is similar to Level (Mansion) in Miami. Spider played lots of hits and anthem, I guess the crowd. The Freak played a little harder. The crowd didn't make much noise, but the vibe was good. An Asian guy asked me in Dutch for some substances. :p
Sun - a hardcore party called T-Time, which goes from 6 pm to 11 or 12 each week, at a small club named Sol. On this night it was followed by an afterparty at a nearby bar (Cafe Nasty), to continue til 2:30 am. The vibe was amazing!
Mon - there was supposed to be some event at Sol again, but when I heard Salt-N-Pepa playing there, I figured it wasn't happening :p
So I went over to La Rumba in the Leidseplein, for supposedly an Asian night - first Asian party/night that I've been to where there were more non-Asians than Asians. :p
I also came across a cool lounge named TWSTD, where there was a DJ contest, followed by various DJ's dropping deep house - info at www.twstd.nl
I brought my Walkman with me, and it's been great listening to ID&T!
Interestingly, I visited 4 record shops (mostly on Nieuw Nieuw, and another near the red light district), but didn't see much trance on vinyl. Just a little in some of them. Did I go to the wrong places?
Also, the prices are similar to that of records in the US, but theirs are in Euros.
Also, I saw Chris Fortier on the same flight from JFK to London. |

it was an amazing party
even with muddy terrain to overcome...
IMO (not incl. Dance Valley) it was the best festival i've ever been to as well... i can't comment on DV cos i havent done that - but it beats everything in England.. and the rest in Holland for organisation and just plain ol'whackiness. |
