My first gig...

a party for my frat...

i had fun but it ing pissed me off... the thing is, i went into it with high expectations cause all my friends were like, so many people are gonna be there and they're gonna go ing nuts...

well there were a fair amount of people there, almost 100.

my mixing was flawless. my tracklisting was sick. a few people went up to me and asked me where they could see me regularly, but it's ing college and everyone's too damn stuck up to give up their inhibitions and enjoy somthing that's not dave matthews or biggie.

the worst part was these kids kept telling me, yo put on rap, we're getting requests to turn the 'techno' off. so ing pissed off...

overall though, the gig gave me so much confidence, because i was mixing on a ty mixer with ty sound with people yelling at me telling me to play rap and i still mixed perfectly and played a sick set.

in A.... hope your first gigs were more fun.

at least you did well, but ya those people that yell at you to turn the 'techno' off is a real dent and can be annoying

Don't let the little rap bitches get you down. I hate that. Thats awesome you played a flawless set and it sounds like you do real well under pressure. Keep up the good work. I wish I worked that well under pressure like that.

I know the feeling. I once played for 600 ppl at a party. I really wanted to play trance, but as you can gess most of them wanted to hear that ing radio pop and rap. I wasn't left with much of a choice there. I was kind of sad after the gig and i just cant understand why the hell people want to listen to .

Did you feel any type of confidence when they asked you that?

I may run into the same problem too. I'm playing at this club/lounge that we have at my school. There's gonna be alot of college kids there, probably the same as your party. The good thing is that i'm gonna be kind of set back from the crowd so hopefully I won't get any hip hop hand-ballers telling me what I should play.

I think everyone had the "put on some more rap" problem. I did that for a house party, know what actually works is House....when everyone is drunk. Drop some house and ppl are like this isn't bad, then as they get drunker, change the style

^PS. my first gig was spinning trance at a Rock/Punk/Ska concert. 600 ppl, hows that for variety.

i thought that in your case it actually IS techno :conf:
(based on tracklistings/favorite tracks posts i believe i saw from you, and based on your intec sig) :wtf:
stevebutabi
haha no i never even considered playing techno for the crowd... wow that would be a sight to see.

yeah man that def gave me confidence... it's just that i had such high hopes for my first gig...

here's the thing- i didn't really hold it against my friends last night for telling me to cut off my set and play rap because they don't UNDERSTAND that dj'ing isn't just about playing records... they don't understand the emotion and creativity that goes into a set, and that i take it extremely personally when someone tells me to stop playing my music... it's like interupting someone in the middle of a speech and telling them to shut the hell up.:(

A soul thing.
