Alright, heres the deal: I've got about $400 to spend and I've been considering buying a nice midi controller (like a Radium or Evolution) and a sound card - then I remembered we have a casio keyboard in our basement that my stepdad bought, and never uses. So I go dig it out and sure enough it has a midi out.

This is it (couldn't find a better pic). Casio CTK-533. Its 61 key, has its own bank of lame sounds and a few presets. No effects knobs or sliders or other useful tricks - just a keyboard.
I'm wondering if a Radium (or something similiar) would be worth the extra $200. I'm getting more and more serious about producing and don't mind buying it if it's really worth it in the long run. |

taking back what I said in your other thread.. I realzied that if you DO get a hardware synth.. you can just plug the hardware into the audiophiles MIDI Out and you can plug your controller into your computers MIDI In.
Unless you need to do a MIDI dump your synth doesn't need to send data to your computer
But so long as the keys work I would say don't waste the money on a new one... those knobs might look inviting but are actually quite useless |

Man, buy a used Yamaha AN1-X!! It will serve the midi control pourpose plus give you the capability of producing really phat sounds. Like nord leadish strings. You can find them on ebay for $300USD or so |

the evolution MK-461c is great. if you use softsynths, its your best friend because you have 10 memory banks to preset all the knobs and sliders so you have real things to move instead of clickiing and dragging the mouse.
however i don't buy into the softsynth hype i play on a virus classic, its really really really good for this too. you don't have to go thru the extensively deep menu system to get to parameters you change alot. like LFO #3, that bizatch is buring deep within the menus on the classic and the B. i even assign the filter to one of the sliders to leave the mod wheel open to other things, theres so many possibilities!
i mean yeah you can deal with the casio however i'm sure the keyaction is not that great (at least mine wasnt) and you dont have all this extensive midi control. up to you man, a new MK-461c (top of the line) is $260 at guitar center. |
