So there was a protest after all, right?

I'm confused.

Saying the incident disturbed him and might have cost him a gold medal, Lima was supported by Brazilian team officials. They filed a formal protest, challenging the victory of Italy's Stefano Baldini and second-place finish of Meb Keflezighi of the U.S.

"I don't know if I would have won, but things would have been different," he said. "After that, it was hard to get my rhythm back. It really distracted me."

The Brazilian track federation protested the result and sought a duplicate gold medal for de Lima, but while the jurors expressed sympathy, they said they couldn't change the result. Brazil said it would appeal to sports' international arbitration panel.

"I'm not going to cry forever about the incident, although it broke my concentration," de Lima said, "but I managed to finish and the bronze medal in such a difficult marathon is also a great achievement."

same thing nearly happened to Markus Rogan, our austrian swimmer, when Aaron Peirsol got disqualified becuz of a technical fault, so Rogan would have got the gold-medail instead of peirsol, but as the 2 were friends, Rogan was really worried about that disqualification of peirsol, as he didn't want to get a gold-medail this way, so for 10 minutes of clarification of the situation, Rogan was on first place and Peirsol disqualified, but then the referees discussed peirsol's technical fault and then said, that it wasn't really a technical fault as it was just a regular move by him; so Peirsol got the gold-medail back

I read about this, and I think it's really poor of this nobber to do this. I hope they give him a gold for it, but I doubt they will.

EDIT: Whoops, that sounds wierd, I hope they give the RUNNER the gold, not the priest-guy.

Does "filho-da-puta" mean "son of a B*tch"? I swear I've seen that somewhere.

Shocked that this happened, but if I was de lima I would have toed him right in the sack.

That would have been funny.

On a serious note tho' I thought he took the whole thing in his stride and it was fantastic to see him smiling about it all at the end of the race.

no eh? I was thinking the same thing.

How the hell can the Italian actually go back home and act like he really did win the medal, when everyone knows that he wouldn't have won it if it wasn't for the dumbass priest.

As for punishment; the priest should get 4 years in jail. Same amount of time the Brazilian runner dedicated to WIN the gold which he deserves.
