quick audio recording question

i know this isn't really technically the place for this, but no one ever goes into the help forum, i'll delete this after i get an answer, i promise
so i used to have my mixer play through the soundcard on ym computer, mixer's out going into the line in on my computer, everything plays through my computer speakers
well i just a week or two got a laptop and i was trying to hook it up to the laptop, and it doesn't have a line in thing, but it has a mic plug
so i wasn't sure if it'd work, and i plugged it in, and nothing played out the speakers while the record was playing
however, then i went into cooledit and pressed record, and sure enough, the computer was definately getting input from my turntables, and it was decent quality and whatnot too
but it won't play on the speakers live
recording then playing back is fine, but i can't figure out how to get it to just play while the record plays w/o recording
any have any ideas?

There's probably separate volume controls for your Line-In and your Microphone.

You need to take the mic off mute if you want to hear it at the same time.

Volume icon >> Options >> Properties >> Microphone checkbox >> Ok >> Microphone mute box

mezzir

that shoulda worked, thats what i did on my old comp
i'm stumped :(
FrosT
your in the wrong spot. you are in the recording section, you want to be in the playback. In volume control go to options then make sure its set on playback, then check the box.

I'm pretty sure recording through the mic in will give you a recording in mono, too. Be careful of that. You need a line in for stereo iirc.

in the screenshot i uploaded, the box on the right(the active window) is the playback window :(
i think that's my problem

hm, and i figured a way to get a stereo mix slider next to the mic and cd player volumes, that might help, though i'm not at home so i got nothing in input atm

Yes I know that is the playback, but you dont have mic selected as one of the options like in the left box, notice mine has microphone on it. In that window you have to go to options then properties and select it, like I said before

yeah no i know, xp has it set to two different volume control thingies, one for recording and one for playback
and its not giving me mic as an option in the playback one, thats my problem
:(

what devices are in the properties list for playback?

mezzir

volume control, wave, SW Synth, cd audio, pc speaker
and if i click the recording radio button, those change to:
stereo mix, cd audio, and microphone

Interesting. You may not be able to do it that way. Do you have the latest drivers for the card? Might have the opeion on a newer driver version, but chances are slim

You could prob trick winamp into doing it for you, but there would be a delay and that gets to be really trippy.
