After weeks of pondering a recent conversation i decided to share it w/ the trusty TAs.
2 months ago i got my first piercing ( a 16g barbell in my cartilage)
They put a slgt longer bar in for the healing and suggested i get a shorter one when it heals. I was considering the options, and had the follwing discussion w/ a friend in a bar:
me: So when u got your barbell did you move on to get the shorter one rgt away? i think im gonna change mine
friend: yes i did, but it depends if your rocker or raver
me: *confused* am i missing something here? im a lil bit of both 50/50 really
Friend: Then you should keep it long, if u were rocker i would tell u short.
This was at a loud bar so i couldnt probe for why this is. Am i totally missing some kind of subculture here? Is how you wear your peircing a definition of who you are?

| Ummm, I do tend to see this patern with such piercings but I think it depends on what the person wants. Or maybe some unknown person started a trend I dunno but its ur piercing. Just like they say there is a male and female side to get ur nose pierced. Bull! Its ur in nose. And supposedly if u pierce it on the opposite side of the sex u are then u are so called gay or lesb. People are getting so petty they are stereo typing piercings now  |

| I have only one piercing(my eye brow) and i have to say I have NEVER heard of something like that. Like eyes said i think its just something someone started and many people just listend. I wear baggy ass clothes but im not a rapper, i have purple hair, piercing, and spiky hair, but im not a rocker, but i listen to anything(mostly EDM). lol...what im trying to say as long as ya know what you are inside dosent matter how you express it outside. |

| I wear rings on my nipples, cause if I wore barbells, that would mean i'm punk or emo... and everyone would see that right away and notice it, and always invite me to punk shows. :haha: :p |

| Piercings have always followed a scene, unfortunately. Punk piercings, metal piercings, etc. It's all a bucnh of bs and i really don't feel like getting into the intricacies of each scene. what you should do is wear piercings the way you want to, regardless of scene. |

i agree with all of you on the individual preference for piercings, and it is not going to effect how i wear mine. i like a certain look i wear it, it was just a bizarre statement and wanted to be sure i wasnt living under a rock somewhere

Lol I thought the rules of piercing went out the window years ago. There is still a lot of taboo in the work place, but not as bad as there used to be.
This is how its been as I've grown up. I got my first hole about 10 or 12 years ago, when I was still in grade school. Back then it was not cool for guys to have earrings at all (where I was living anyway, but pretty much in general). Back in the day if you were a guy and had a stud in your right ear that was a sign you were gay (supposedly, started as a way for gay men to meet because it was also not cool to be outwardly gay then.) If you got one in the right side not knowing this fact, which happened a lot considering most people are right handed and gun piercing was rampant, you could get one in the left at the same time which balanced you out. Years later when I started increasing the size of my lobe that was not cool either. People were using Dowling, pens, bolts, screws all kind of stuff to stretch their holes. Larger gauged ears were considered "punk" or "hardcore" and today still is to some extent, but not as much as it was. It's extreme appearance is the only thing that ties the two together anymore as far as I can tell. Now 14 and 12 gauge are standard, I remember when that was 4 or 5 steps larger than what everyone else had.
I don't remember any weirdness about barbell length, but it might be something newly invented lol. When all the girls in the world got their belly buttons done, I thought all labels associated with piercing went away. That to me marked the time when it was almost imposable to do unique things as far as general piercing was concerned (ears, face). I had my tragus done a while before this period and that was my third venture into the "different crowd". Never really thought how much the art has evolved until I read this thread. I don't really know where to go next, I was always kind of on top of things when it came to stepping up and doing something different. Now even neck and hands are all fairly common. I removed all of my facial ones (lip and such)
Anyway like everyone else said, just wear it how you like. Iv cut my holes down to four, all on the left side keeping it oldschool, and at the same time representing my views on duality, and alternative culture. Some people are like WTF ever, how do a couple holes do that, but when you wear them as an extension of yourself and not just some decoration its not very hard. I can still conduct myself in a professional and intellectual way regardless of what's in my ears, and have changed a lot of peoples perspectives on piercing and other forms of body art. Some people like to wear them for decoration, and more power to them, I choose to use mine as a tool. I get strange looks some days and compliments others (got a couple today actually :) ) Think about what you want to wear in it, and what you want it to say then put it all together. They area good way to meet people and start some pretty interesting conversations when in strange places. Anyway im rambling good luck with the hole. Should take a picture and put it up in the thread id like to see where abouts it is. ( I got my upper cartlage hole far inside so I could wear spikes if I wanted to. Little bit diferent than most, but found some strange things I can do with it.) |

wow frost your passionate i like that. I dont have a digi camera or neway to post a pic, but its in a pretty traditional spot. I first considered a hoop but i wanted something different and i went for the barbell. As soon as i got it i was in love w/ the piercing and started thinking about what to get next. Then it got infected lol...some intensive care for a day took care of it and i was well on my way to healing but i at this time dont want another one. I dont think i could evr get facial piercings or anything other then my ears for that matter, even w/ my ears im limited (i like the conch ) Since i wear hearing aids that would hinder the healing of the piercing.
One thng i gotta say, i always liked the way piercings looked on others but didnt really think about getting one for myself until i got into the nyc music scene, both edm and rock. Everyone that knows me well do agree that it totally fits me and my personality. Yes it is a part of me.
ok ill stop rambling now |

That sucks, there is a girl in one of my buisness classes with hearing aids that gives me about having mine done all the time, becuase she can't. You could prob get away with some cool orbitals, but those can get pretty nasty, if you infect easily. |
