Hey guys, I have to ship my turntables from NY to California. I'm in Cali so a friend is gonna do it. I don't have the original boxes.... What should I tell him to do? I'm gonna make him go to a packaging place, but what should be done? I really dont want them to get ed up... I'm really concerned about the tonearn. Also someone said the platters should be taken off and wrapped by themselves too... Should I send Air or Ground?

HELP!!!! PLEASE!!!
Kevin
Well, i would definetely use a sh!t load of foam for starters, and as far as the tonearm goes, just use a couple of twist-ties to hold it down, ya know like how they come new. You must definetely remove the platter and wrap it seperately, but be careful when removing it so you dont damage the magnet. Make sure the box you ship it in is at least as big as the one they originally come in. Oh yeah, and be prepared to fork over some serious bucks to ship these puppies!
I just shipped a table that weighed 27 lbs. total with all the packaging, and it cost $47 to ship 1st class(USPS)! Ouch!!!
Good Luck,
Kev

P.S. As far as whether or not ground or air ship, i have no clue. I would guess which ever is faster and means your package is handled by fewer individuals.

I bought them used, so I don't know how they originally came. What should the tonearm be tied down too? Should the lock be closed or open? And ummm how does the plate come off? I'm in California, so a friend in NY is gonna have to do this.

I don't wanna spend the money for flight cases... Even if I did have them, would it be safe to just put the turntables in there without doing anything for the tonearm etc, and then send them?

I was thinking of ordering cases to my house in NY and having a friend put the turntables in each case, and then back into the boxes that the cases come in. I still dunno how safe that is.

How does the deck plate come off???? Use hands or a tool? Pop it straight out or angle?
Kevin
okay man, they come in big boxes about the size a reciever would come in. The tonarm clamp should be secured, and you should tie the tonearm down at the piont where it is secured by the clamp.
As far as the platter, there are two holes in it where you can get your fingers into and GENTLY pull the platter up and off the spindle. This can be difficult sometimes because the platter can become wedged on the spindle pretty good. Just tell your friend to do carefully and slowly. The last thing you want to do is chip or damage that magnet.
good luck,
Kev
