a creative thought

I have just read a passage from a book that had me reflect about our tendency to omit external sources of stimuli, such as strangers walking on the street, a dog being playful with it's owner, or the way a couple talks without saying anything at all. I don't think one does it intentionally, but rather because we have the ability, more often than not, to be so enraptured in ourselves- whether for good or bad.

Anyway, I just wanted to impart this to you wonderful TAs. I thought it may be a nice reflection of the beauty that lies right under our noses before we commence a wonderful week-end ahead.

“It has been suggested that the reason our approach to creativity has been rejected so firmly is that people are frightened by the experience. The senses are heightened, very much as they are during a sexual encounter, and this seems almost sacrilegious during work hours. One is, according to our puritan ethos, suppose to suffer during the creative process, not have the equivalent of an orgasm.

The more I read about the process of creativity among famous artists in any medium, the more I am sure that their happy acceptance of this trancelike state is the reason for their greatness.

The human being can be very selective. During a day in the country, after the first few moments of awareness, the drone of the locusts can be edited out of the consciousness. I have heard that workers in garbage dumps soon learn to stop reacting to the stench.

People can also edit out other people.

It is surprising how many people go through life looking but not seeing. They have no interest in the activities around them, operating in a kind of limited consciousness.

See the world around you. Even the most common activities are amazingly interesting. Here is a crowded market. See the tentative squeezing of fruit, the suspicious expression. The judgmental smelling of a melon. Is it fresh? The thoughtful rejection or the satisfied acceptance as it is placed carefully in the shopping cart.”

I agree wholeheartedly with this. Beauty lies all around you, at all times. I sometimes like to just sit somewhere and close my eyes and try to identify everything by smell. Try it sometime... it's harder than you think to close off such a major sensory input and rely on another.

The smell of baking bread, or a waft of perfume, the succulent scent of barbecuing chicken... the world is a beautiful place, but you have to actually notice it first.

Good call Allegory! :)

If you can take pleasure in the small things, you will find that it is much easier to find the pleasure in other things.
