General Advices forum: relationships, careers, family problems, depression,....

Some people liked this idea in a thread in the chill out room, so I thought I'd have a thread here and in the site suggestions area about it.

Unlike real life, TA gives us the opportunity to discuss things with all kinds of people from several different places, and each of these users can contribute with their point of view, cultural background and opinion.

Often, we would like to have some advice in our lives, specially when we're dealing with something new/important that we give more thought than usual. In this case, being able to listen to different opinions is a good way to take all points into consideration, and hopefully end up doing a wiser thing.

Mostly, we think of relationships, but it could be about careers, family problems, depression and any other situation in which we would like to hear what other people think. Besides, the COR's got loads of threads with people asking for advice, right? What do you guys think?

It could be a sub-directory in the COR, like the FAQ forum.

It's a good idea. But like any other forum, there are risks of not taking something serious, example: the person who posted the first reply, which pretty much eliminates any type of enthusiasm. Could you imagine coming here asking for some productive advices on what to do about a certain problem and having a person like that, BTG, replying by trying to be cool and annoying? In that case, it would be a waste a time.
Fortunately, there are some people that can be serious when appropiate and can manage to give out good advice about sensitive issues. The idea is good. :)

I think it's a great idea. There might be a few people on here who dont take things seriously, or someone might just be having a bad day or whatever, but then there are loads of TA's who've got good advice to give. I say it's worth it.

Maybe we should also have a sticky drunk thread. So many get made/closed/deleted that it would make sense to have one that everyone can ramble in (assuming they can find it under the influence :p). It might lower the tone of the site a bit (well, maybe not :p) but it would save the mods a load of time haha.

And personally I think we should have another forum along the lines of the Political Forum, but for philosophical discussions. There are a couple of threads in the Political Forum about life, the universe and everything but it's not really the place for it. Having a separate forum to discuss religion/life/philosphy/paranormal phenomena in general would be kick-ass.

Idealy in some utopia haven forum, this would be a great idea, but since this is TA, and we are filled with these immature, arrogant, and ignorant sons of bitches, like myself.:D Any thread that is made for this only purpose would only provide comical fodder for us s to use against many other TA's. So my vote in the end is, yes...bring on the emotional distress thread!

Lira, your too nice a guy to realize the harm something like this could do as well. Not that I would take a pot shot at someones personal problems, I only would use it against them if they ever pissed me off.

I'm not necessarily opposed to this, it could certainly reduce the number of "useless" posts made by users who don't like the topic.

The only problem I have with dividing up existing forums into various subdivisions is that it can sometimes significantly decrease the activity in those forums, resulting in less overall discussion as less people view the topic.
Echo of Silence
hmm, I don't think we need to change the current format.

If you want advice you can just post the thread here in Chill Out. Why create a new forum? Chill Out is the "General Discussion Area" and if you're having a relationship problem or want advice on how to handle family problems, depression, etc., just make the thread here.

It's not like people don't respond here. They do. Sure, you get some worthless responses but you'll get worthless responses no matter where you create the threads.

sounds like a good idea, the "relationships" forum would be too specific, but your idea has more sense.

to arbiter: TA is already very subdivided and hasn't lost activity as a whole, but yes a few of those subforums are very dead cause no-one goes to there, like the FAQ one, people ask stuff, but there's no one to answer them. i think swamper or anyone should set a limit for the number of subdivisions allowed, it must stop some day.

The FAQ forum is a good example. I rarely go into that forum, but if the topics were posted in the COR I might have read them and been able to give some useful information. The amount of subdivisions should be roughly based on the demand for new forums (which is probably determined mostly by the number of active members). I don't know if I would put a strict cap on the number of divisions: as more members join it may be possible or even necessary to have more forums to prevent topics from being buried.
