Ivan slams Carribean as it heads toward U.S.
By Patrick O'Driscoll, USA TODAY
Hurricane Ivan's deadly force turned concrete houses into rubble in the southern Caribbean on Wednesday as the storm headed toward the USA. Forecasters warn that Ivan could brush the Gulf Coast of Florida by early next week.

The National Hurricane Center charts the storm on a track similar to that of Hurricane Charley, which hit southwest Florida with 145-mph winds last month. Charley killed 27 people in Florida and caused at least $6.8 billion in insured damage.

But Ivan, which strengthened Wednesday to 140 mph, would have to take a sharper turn north than its present path to become the third hurricane to strike Florida in a month. Hurricane Frances pounded ashore Sunday on Florida's east coast before crossing the state and hitting the Panhandle.

Ivan is expected to hit Cuba on Saturday, after which the path of the storm "is highly uncertain," according to the hurricane center. But forecasters caution that one possible scenario shows Ivan approaching Punta Gorda, Fla., one of the areas hardest hit by Charley.

Some computer weather models predict a path over Florida, while others suggest the storm might head out to sea. "There is no apparent reason to favor one scenario over the other," the center reports. Ivan is still more than 1,000 miles from the USA.

Remnants of Hurricane Frances, which pushed north into Georgia and beyond, are drenching much of the East Coast. The storm is blamed for 19 deaths in Florida, Georgia and South Carolina. It also killed two in the Bahamas.

President Bush, who signed a $2 billion emergency relief bill for Florida on Wednesday morning, flew to the state in the afternoon for his third hurricane-related visit since mid-August. Bush went to Port St. Lucie to survey damage from Frances and help distribute aid with his brother Jeb, Florida's governor. From there, he went to the hurricane center in Miami for an update on Ivan.

Already dubbed "Ivan the Terrible" by TV weathercasters, it is the strongest Caribbean storm in more than a decade. It smashed homes Tuesday on Grenada, including that of the prime minister, and killed at least nine. The island nation of about 90,000 people is known for the U.S. invasion in 1983 after a Marxist coup.

The hurricane also damaged hundreds of houses in Barbados, St., Lucia and St. Vincent.

Ivan's current path would take it over Jamaica by Friday and Cuba by Saturday. Watches and warnings were posted along the Venezuelan and Colombian coasts and for the islands of Aruba, Bonaire and Curacao. Haiti, the Dominican Republic and the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico all are on alert.

What's up with the names of these hurricanes? I want to hear something like Hurricane Trance or something like that. Damn those who name these hurricanes. "El Niņo"? What was that all about? Now Ivan? Come on. We need better names.
blazed it
i'm glad i don't live in florida
blazed it
hurricanes and tropical storms are named after males and females, but i forget how they pick the name.
jrbuddha
alphabetically, alternating between male and female

one year A starts a male name, then B a female name etc...

next year A starts as a female name
Orbital32
can we nominate names? I mean Hurricane Orb does have a nice ring to it!
jrbuddha
Found a LINK link that better describes the naming process

15 dead in I think Grenada was on the news this morning

I Nominate Hurricane Arturo for the forums, simply cos if we let him mod how he wanted to and Neo/Del didn't keep him in order at times, it'd be a hell of a mess afterwards :stongue: :stongue:

My uncle just sailed from the Bahamas to Greneda last month to live there. He restored this beautiful antique sailboat w/ his wife and they've been waiting for that their whole life practically (to fix it up enough so they can sail around like that)...they live and breathe that boat. Anyway, no one in my family has heard from them and my mom is freaking out. They were about an hour away from the mainland...just chilling out on the boat. If no one can reach them soon, my other uncle is going to fly to Greneda to go see if they are ok. Please say a prayer for them....
