anybody else experience these or something similar?

*** the security icon in my system tray keeps popping up telling me my firewall is off and virus protection is not installed. thing is that the firewall notice keeps saying my firewall is ON then OFF when in reality it is always OFF.

*** also problems with IE shutting down on its own.

anybody else experience this? what did you do about it? i'm thinking about getting rid of this SP2 crap until they fix the bugs and make it more stable...

I don't have XP, but I've heard there are a lot of widespread problems both with the installation process and post-installation. At this point my uneducated advice is to stay away from SP2 until it's working properly.

I agree here, if there are single necessary updates and you can do them yourself, then do it, but as yet I don't trust this SP as far as i could throw bill gates

I installed just for the hell of it, to see what will happened and the only thing I noticed so far is that my computer is even sloooower than it was before. But on my laptop IE freezes sometimes every since the update so it might go "back in time".

Since I haven't heard a positive review on SP2 yet, I'm not installing. Why fix it if it ain't broke?

I hear that you need to integrate(slipstream) SP2 with the windows install CD to make it run smoothly. www.neowin.net for further help

I always download a full copy of windows with the service pack and reinstall that, i just cbf thinking about such things.

Downloading XP isn't illegal if it already came with my computer is it?

i installed it at work to see if it was any good (haha, use work as a guineapig) and i uninstalled it the same day.

it was necessary for me to uninstall it, as with it installed, it seemed to disagree with our adsl modem. every time i connected to the internet, after about 1 minute it would just lock up completely. this is strange for XP in general, as it handles crashes very well and generally doesnt do such an impression of windows 95, but this thing just completely locked and the only thing which worked were the power buttons.

microsoft can stick their in sp2.

sp2 is another ploy by microsoft to push out the competetion. by including firewall and antivirus services in windows, it means that computer manufacturers/sellers are less likely to pay for a license to resell, for example, Norton, when there is antivirus software now included in the windows reselling licenses.

plus it forces the new media player upon you, as well as reinstalling MICROSOFT ING MESSENGER for me without asking. i thought i was installing a service pack not a bloody software pack, most of which i didnt ask for.
