However, Energy 2000 is an excellent example for proving my personal point. Everyone knows that this set is a masterpiece. But yes, the mixing is rather sloppy and subpar if we take the critical approach you're taking. However, MUSICALLY speaking, the whole set is genius, brilliant, out of this world. Not for the mixing, but for the raw energy and euphoria that Tiesto constructed throught the harmonic and rhythmic development of the set. The rollercoaster of intensity and emotion expressed by mixing contrasts and the general programming in the set are actually pretty complex and electrifying from a musical standpoint and I doubt that Armin, Oakey, let alone an amateur dj could do something like it. There's NO dj on this earth that could have accomplished what he did on that set.
I'll give credit where it's due. In beatmatching and general technique PvD is far superior to Armin anyway. Not to speak of track selection and track placement, where Armin fails greatly to impress me as a musician while PvD and Tiesto are the leading experts of their respective movements in Holland and Germany. |
I won't argue with that. It would have to be in my top five live sets, even with the errors. It is great music, non-stop. I'd love to give you some of my sets, and have you listen to them with an intent of ripping them apart. That's the only way to get better. But I spend a lot of time on programming and energy control before I record. That is something I have learned from Tiesto. It's not always the same, ie. I have sets that build start to finish, sets that build up then down, back and forth. Depends on the mood I am trying to accomplish. That is one thing I will not question Tiesto on, and I understand his popularity, based on that and the fact that 98-99 percent of his listeners aren't gonna notice the things I do. I guess I come off harsh, because I expect more. On the same token, I have never played the venues he has, in front of the amount of people he has. There is a chance that I would choke and sound just as sloppy. For some reason, I would like to find out though. |

I'm done bashing. It's really not supposed to be bashing, but I know that's the way I presented it. I will make an effort to cut that out. I understand the annoyment. I just get so frustrated with the ego these guys have, when they should appreciate what they have and the opportunities they get. I think I express my frustration wrong sometimes. |

I understand where you're coming from, and I have no problem with that. What I said wasn't directed at just you, but rather a lot of people here. Anyways...
I don't think that most artists get a big ego when they get ranked high on the DJ Mag list. I've heard a ton of reports about Tijs being really humble in person lately. I can count on one hand the amount of negative reports I've heard about his interaction with fans over the course of five-years. I also think that people expect way too much of DJs when they become number one on a silly contest.
In my opinion, Tiësto is doing what he's always done. Now, I'm a total Tijs-whore, but I respect the opinions of you all, and am the first to say that his mixing has slipped a bit in the past year. But that's beside the point.
What I'm trying to say is that when a DJ hits number one, everybody expects him to keep throwing out "OMG CHOON" or "OMG SWEET MIX" night-after-night, song-after-song. Yet when the DJs simply continue to do what they've always done, and not push the bar, they get insulted.
And don't tell me that, "Oh, he's number one, he should always be producing quality stuff." When you're number one, you're expected to tour more often, do more publicity stunts, etc., and you don't have any time for being able to sit down and relax.
What people need to do is say " DJ Mag, all it is is a big popularity contest."

I agree. As my co-worker would say, "When you're number one, someone's always trying to take you down." There's a lot of pressure, and there is no way to gauge who the best dj is, that comes down to opinion. There are a lot of quality dj's from a lot of different genres. Those polls are more "popularity contests" as you said, which really don't mean . I just want dj's to give their all every time. I understand mistakes, we all make them. It just seems like some of the bigger guys get lazy about it. Oakie is a prime example. He really is the forefather of Trance, IMO. He always brings good tracks, but he started to not care as much (get too ed up, lazy, whatever). It annoys me, because they don't respect what they have. Were I to ever get big, which is doubtful due to the politics of this industry and my unwillingness to kiss ass, I would hope that I would appreciate it and continue to try and bring my best to every crowd that watches me. |

I don't think there's a need to make inflammatory comments or otherwise personal attacks on people who like Tiesto, or people who dislike Tiesto. Both ways. It's downright stupid and doesn't add to the worth of a thread in increasing the level of friendly, helpful discussion to those who are interested.
It's fine to reason out one's opinions for like or dislike politely while realizing that since we are different people, we listen to different music in different ways. It is a very simple and fundamental thing. Doesn't this sound ridiculous:
A: "WHAT'S UR FAVORITE COLOR?"
B: "BLUE OF COURSE? WHAT'S YOURS?"
A: "RED!"
B: "WTF?!? OMG U SUX0R BLUE IS A L3MUR COLOR, U SUCK!!!"
People eat different food, drive different automobiles -- or don't drive at all and choose to bike -- and while we're all human, each of us makes choices that are right for "me". Not for someone else, but for you. You're entitled to that as long as it doesn't infringe or oppose or ruin someone else's quality to enjoy... uh... a DJ?!?
Instead of repetitively bashing Tiesto like a badly-programmed character in a computer game having a spazzy polygon collision with the "wall", consider this: would it not be better for one to speak well of the artists he or she DOES like? One may have already mentioned he hates Tiesto once, twice, thrice... whatever. Redundant.
Besides, by saying "i hate TIESTO TIESTO TIESTO he sucks", all you're doing is being a virtually ambulatory adboard for him and racking up Google hits for him... for FREE! You've become the very thing you claim to hate. You really wanna do that? The very mention of his name can get those people not familiar with him (yet) curious. Oh lookee, you've just helped Tiesto win a few more fans! Imploding psychology. ;)
Such REDUNDANCY :crazy: is disappointing. We all make mistakes, but we've got to learn. Why make more problems for the human race? This is music.
