some cops I know told me that they never chase a motorcycle that tries to get away because the chase will always end with the motocyclist either getting away or dying. i thought that meant they had a policy about not putting anyone's life in danger in a high speed chase
she wasn't going fast enough to cause a danger to anyone else...but i bet the accident itself, clean up crews and investigators caused a dangerous discontinuity in traffic |

Diabolic...she wasn't "sentenced to death" or "executed". You're using highly inflammatory and inappropriate language there...both of those terms imply premeditation and intent...the cops had neither.
|
Really? Ramming someone at 80+ mph isn't sentencing them to some sort of horrible impairment? Really?
Intent? Did the cop or didn't the cop turn his wheel into the back of that car? I think every turn of the wheel is pretty damn premeditated. |

i dont feel sorry for the driver, but i feel sorry for the passenger. |
True that this is a sad story.
How sorry I would have been though for the other victims and victims families had her reckless driving caused the death or injury of one of those innocent drivers that she cared not about during the chase. It is a miracle that no one else was hurt. It is a very sad story and horrible what the families of these 2 victims must have had to go thru. However, the responsibilty of that drivers safety was ultimately in her own hands and she opted to risk all that when she made the decision to run from the cops. |

| Pit manuvere is safe at low speeds (Up to around 40km/h), after that it gets quite dangereous. I can't believe that trooper used it at those speeds. |

no it's not. That tactic has been used countless times without fatal results or serious injury. I do agree that at that speed...probably not a good choice. As mentioned, the two cop cars could have attempted to box her in and force her to slow down.
Intent to force a driver off the road does not equal intent to maim or kill
Can anyone really argue that the cops "intended" to hurt or kill the driver and passenger? give me a break.
once again, it's the cops who get the beat down...I've said it before...thankless job. If they'd let her speed away and she hit someone, everyone would be ripping the cops for doing nothing. It's a wonder anyone wants to do that job...
don't interpret this as cold...but, along the lines of what angelgirl said, I can more live with the driver and passenger dying then them causing a wreck where someone who is 100% innocent is hurt or killed. The cops may have used poor judgement...but not as poor as that idiot driver who tried to flee. |

| The cop fully well knew what using the manoever at such high speed would do. |

thats ed no matter how you look at it. at those speeds you dont knock someone off the road, thats just ed up.
those cops should be charged with murder. |

so what do they do, wait until they crash into some innocent people, please.
It's sad that it had to end like that, but running away from Police is not an option, 2 usually chases involve innocent deaths period.
I think the trooper chose to risk their lives rather then putting their own or bistanders |

yep they usually don't bother with motorcycles as they could not keep up with them and would risk too much trying to chase them |

I dont blame the cop, he was just doing his job. For all he knew the car could be stolen or full of crack cocaine...
But i do fell srry for the families.. |

After watching that video I just counldn't believe that it was concidered "proper use of force"...As it was stated here, they were goin WAY too fast for the "pit maneouver"...Clearly they shold have tried to "box" them in which has been used to SLOW down the fleeing car and then bring them to a stop...The police could have radioed ahead for more units and so on...There were other alternatives then this bonehead maneouver and that if that cop did that HERE he would have been charged...I mean she was driving a in SUV which was unstable at high speeds anyway...I NO WAY approve people who try to get away from the cops but this was totally inappropriate..

Funny how not one of the bleeding-hearts/cop-haters has been able to come up with an alternative course of action that they could have followed. And this is in hindsight, too, it should be easy to come up with something! Box her in, sure, simple right?
Honestly now, I can't believe what I'm seeing. You all thought it was fine when cops arrested someone who was just taking pictures and happened to be belligerent, but when someone actually engages the cops in a high-speed chase on the highway, it's not their responsibility when something bad happens?
Sure, it sucks what happened, but as has already been said in this thread, the cop was just doing his job. It could have been a getaway car or full of AK-47s f'r'chrissakes. |
