What does it mean when a game goes gold?

well?
MoonMan
It means the software has finished its testing stage, and the master cd is then sent to a publication plant for duplication, then sent to retail stores. ;)

I thought to go, "Gold" at had to sell at least 100,000 copies? (or am I thinking records?) :p
BadBadNeil
;) thats records, but maybe they should have a gold and platinum selling status for games too

MoonMan is right. In this stage everything is happy because the release date is now SET ( and you know how game developers are when it comes to release dates ) and its SOON after a game goes gold.

to me gold means game is about to be release really really soon in the stores and rdy to dl now!!
TrancE951
It means the game has been released, and at least two patches have been made available - so now it works!

This site has pretty much died but back in the day you could look here to see if a game had "gone gold" yet.

Yeah, that's records. But it's 500,000 for records.

A game is gold before it hits shelves. Most of this is done through pre-sale orders.

This is confusing compared to albums since an actual printing of a certain amount of copies would make it gold while it is in retail sales and not before.

From the RIAA:

The RIAAŽ GoldŽ and PlatinumŽ Awards program was launched in 1958 in an effort to create a standard by which to measure sales of a sound recording. In the beginning, there was only a GoldŽ album award for the sale of 500,000 copies. As the industry grew, other awards were developed. The PlatinumŽ award (1,000,000 sold) was created in 1976 and with the advent of the compact disc and the subsequent increase in sales, the Multi-Platinum™ award was created in 1984. On March 16, 1999, the RIAAŽ launched the DiamondŽ Awards, honoring sales of 10 million copies or more of an album or single.
