okay, so one of the imbecils in my family managed to get a whole load of spyware/adware onto the computer after clicking some dodgy links... and i'm left to clear it up

i used spy sweeper, and it's done a pretty good job of getting rid of all the key loggers/porn adverts... but there's one thing left which it just can't get

it's called "apropos" and it's residing (??) in c:\windows\system\atl.dll... when i try to delete it from quarantine or straight from the folder, it just reappears.

so, what can i do to get rid of this for good?

any help greatly appreciated

use both adaware and spybot search and destroy
and if theres something you still cant get rid of, search for the name in google

If they screwed up your comp that bad, and you're bored, just backup and reformat.

Well if you delete the file and it keeps reappearing, then there's obviously some other process running which is creating it. If I were you, I'd get Hijack This and remove any suspicious startup items. I don't really have the expertise to help you if it's on an XP system since I'm not familiar with the items which are supposed to be on the startup list for that OS. So I'd suggest you post a Hijack This log on the www.spywareinfo.com forums, here:

tribu
1. Go to start > Run
2. Enter Regedit
3. Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > SOFTWARE > Microsoft > Windows > Current Version
4. Check the following folders for any programs you dont want: Run, RunOnce, RunOnceEx
5. Reboot.

EDIT: Not sure if this is the procedure for XP, but you might try it...

if you want to take a risk, delete all the *.dll and *.exe files from your windows/* and windows/systemm32/* folders starting from the estimated date that you think the viruses and adware started to come ..... that's a big risk, but there are times when you need to make choices in life ..

by the way .. atl.dll is an important windows file .. it has something to do with vc++, which partially runs windows, of course..
