There is validity to the different genres not really being too important. It is more about the music. On the other hand, there are a lot of categorizations for EDM, and there should be. Obviously there are grey areas, but if you tell someone you play trance, or house, or D n B, they will usually understand you, if into EDM. I think it's pretty cool that he's gonna write a paper about it. Trying to deliniate when things started will be near impossible, but good luck doing it. Things just kind of progress and change. Even trance, which, in large part, was slower in the past is faster now. A lot of the so called "mcprog" out there now sounds similar to the old trance. Same tempo, but the melodies are different, more chill and sometimes ambient. But it's really not that important as long as it's good music.

youll get alot of different answers because Psy-Trance was long before 'trance'

Yep, Goa, which I'm pretty sure falls under Psy-Trance, has been around a long time.

I would say 1990 - 92, the years when you could describe records most obviously as Trance tracks most obviously for the first time (Love Stimulation, Barbarella, Age Of Love, etc...)

Now when it comes to defining EDM in general... The term 'Electronica(l)(l)' is a crap term and makes it sound as if the music has no emotion at all; the term 'Epic House' for Trance music is a term that makes it all sound elitist.

Now, when it comes to defining music, it's always difficult to put something in a box, and some misfits would flame you when you can't make the distinction between Trance, Progressive, Progressive Trance and Progressive Techno - now that is utter bullcrap. The question you have asked however, is not. It should therefore not receive such crappy snippy comments.

Galapidate, I wish you good luck with your research.

I don't even think someone should be ripped for not understanding, or having a different opinion on the deliniations of genres. Within genres there are so many different sounds and types. It is sometimes hard to categorize a track, because it has aspects from different genres. I will argue, in a reasonable and friendly manner, over tracks that I play that are melodic, but progressive. I have a lot of trance too, but a track having melody doesn't necessarily make it trance. But that's just my opinion, and everyone's is different.

Galipidate - I think it will be very difficult to pinpoint the timeframes, but you will probably be able to have a time period where the styles began.

The KLF were the first to use the term trance, in 1988 with their track "What Time Is Love?".

Imprecise, yes. But just because you dont know what 'trance' means, it doesn't mean other people dont. It is a valid term, and does have a definition, even though it covers a wide range of slightly varying musical sounds.

Yeah, real trance has been around since the early 90's. ty trance like the trance today (nothing new is being made just recycling old stuff and label them 2004 remix of this & that), is not trance.

Its not a case of me not knowing what trance means. I happen to know that it means nothing. Maybe it means something to you, but youll be wrong. The word trance in relation to EDM was pushed by the UK media. It has no definiton in relation to music.
