Hey!
I Recorded this today (it was taken from my weekly show, The Monday Breakdown[thats why you hear an in-stream ad]) hopefully aiming for good mixing and flow, it has alot of older songs within it, but I enjoy them very much. I am going to call this my September Demo and I might also be giving this tape to venues.
I have been offered 2 gigs at @ the Tropix Backdoor (a club with top40 and other variety :( ) and also at Tabu (Hosts of G & D, Marco V, and Christopher Lawrence) I am really wondering if I am ready (as far as mixing is concerned) to step out and do a gig like this, ive only done a few house partys (100-200+). These gigs would be 500-2000+ and as we all know, wrecking or making little mistakes infront of many people isnt a good thing ;)
~Tracklisting~
01. Oceanlab - Clear Blue Water (Ferry Corsten Remix)
02. Chicane feat. Bryan Adams - Dont Give Up 2004 (Agnelli and Nelson Remix)
03. Darren Tate - Shine (Darren Tate vs. Jono Grant Remix)
04. Oceanlab - Beautiful Together (Original Mix)
05. Primer - Indulge
06. Against The Grain - Further (Lemon 8 Mix) ( I apologize for the chip-munk effect)
07. Sonorous - Glass Garden (Ronski Speed Mix)
I would really appreciate educated DJ Critique and Review

Aight so I jus finished up listening to DJ Lanes September Promo Mix and to tell you the truth, this definatley has to be one of the best mixes/sets i've heard outta my good freind...I guess i'll give a short lil review about the set to everyone who is contemplating listening or what not...
--------------
Well the set starts out with Oceanlab - Clear Blue Water (Ferry Corsten) great opener for a trance set, and classic listening on we come up to Chicane feat. Bryan Adams - Dont Give Up 2004 (Agnelli and Nelson Remix) the track mixes in a lil off but lane gets in control, and it is brought in correctley and let out correctley, sounds good then comes another great classic, Shine good mixing again, beat comes in very nyce with a solid kick...into Oceanlab - Beautiful Toghther, another good mix I love this track but the only thing I could really say is two Oceanlab tracks is a lil odd but hey it worked...Onto Primer with another good mix and so on and so fourth the set was mixed well and i'm glad Lane Put this up for everyone to hear, if you like some classic trance...with a lil newer tracks perp this mix...

My honest thoughts on the set.
IMO I was not a big fan of the songs you choose. The set seemd to be dominated by alot of older tunes. IMO you should try to balance the set better between older and newer. The trance "sound" you tried to present could have been done better. The set didnts make me say ..."wow this is awesome" rather it made me say " this sounds old and I heard this sound before". If you want to do trance mixes you got to try to grab the emotions better. This set failed in this reguard.
Most importantly ,I didnt feel any emotion or energy in this set.The programming was medicore. The flow was non-existant.Even with the
medicore tunes if one know how to program well one should be able to make a song sound and feel different to a listener. In this set I felt like the thought was not placed in program selection and all you were doing was trying to play a bunch of "classic" songs.
The mixing was medicore at best. I think 70% of the transitions were either off key, off beat, or both. however, it was a dramatic improvement from your friday set. You should work the eq's better to make your transitions blend better.
Finally the sound quality was ok. there were times when the cd was skipping, the record poping, etc.
I think you have proven to be a much better tech-trance DJ. Let me explain.
It seems you have a better instinct on how to mix old and new in this area. You also seem to have a better understanding of how to build the set. Most importantly you know how to pick and manage the energy levels within the set. I can feel your passion and excitement for tech-trance when you mix. That passion and energy is felt by the listener as well.
Keep working at it. |

I recently downloaded this set to hear what the fuss was about. People saying it was off the hook and some saying it needed improving. I downloaded and one word can pretty much explain the set, "Wow!". Lane, I heard you a few months and you were doing pretty good at the time--You had a few minor strains here and there, but this time around you can tell you put everything you had into this demo. This shows what you can do and hopefully it'll show when you start getting gigs at clubs.
The tracklist was perfect and despite having two Oceanlab tracks, it ran quite well. If there was ONE thing you could possibly improve is the fact that you should go PROG! Just kidding. :) You da man lane, Keep up the great work. |

Thanks so much tim, I really worked hard.
Dave - Thanks for the honesty, I didnt think the mixing was off beat at all, but I dont understand key-mixing well enough to mix that way. Thanks for the kind words regarding tech, I hope to do more in the future :) |
