ATTN: Americans with 5 spare minutes on Tuesday, September 14th

This link details a national call-in effort to help convince Congress to avoid passing legislation that would effectively overturn the infamous Betamax decision of the 1980s. In simple terms, the BETAMAX decision says that if a technology has a legitimate function, it cannot be illegalized simply because some use it illegaly.

Currently, corporate donors are still allowed to indirectly finance political campaigns. This means that on all levels of government, our officials must pander to those who will help fund their re-election efforts. This leads to the sort of action we are seeing here, where government will place the right of business over the rights of an individual. Signing up here will supply you with your local congressperson's contact information (if you dont already know it) so that you may contact them at will tomorrow, September 14th, to inform them that you do not support the passing of this act. It will also supply you with information if you wish to fax them immediately, along with a form letter to spare you the effort of having to do much at all, while allowing the movement to keep a professional face. Please take part if you believe in the ideals behind this movement. If not, thanks for taking some time to read this post.

The Betamax ruling is the only thing that protects your right to own a VCR, tape recorder, CD-burner, DVD-burner, iPod, or TiVo. It's that important. But new legislation that's being pushed through the Senate by lobbyists for the music and movie industries would override the Betamax decision and create a huge liability for any business that makes products which can copy sound or video.

I think it's laughable how they can even think about effectively enforcing measures against people owning any of those items. Are they planning on raiding every house in the country & confiscating them or something?

If the congress think it won't be controversial then they must be smoking crack... god forbid something similar happens over here :nervous:

He doesnt even live in America, man. This issue doesnt really effect him, yet he understands that it can be of some importance. If you had taken time to read the link, youd see that the proposed legislation goes way beyond BETA. With the federal government's history of pushing through unwanted bills as riders or in times of crises (political and economic), would it really be that unrealistic that this one could slip through the cracks as other civil liberty destroying bills have done?

Im not trying to force you into anything, but it seems lately like youve been attacking for the sake of attacking rather that attacking for things you believe are right. If the forums bother you that much, no one forces you to read threads and/or post here.

this topic is really important the fact that theyed make something illegale only based on the fact that it could be used for illegale purposes. this is complete bogus and someone needs to setup an orginzation that accepts donations to fund congressmen to vote against this unconstitutional thing and to send reporters to major news confrences held by the president and many of top officals as this is a complete infracture of constitutnal right. its predicting you might do something bad so they are banning it, with this it allso support a monoplised econmy where as unless you subcontract through an exstsing company that has this ahrdware that cna produce these media you are ed. this is blantant monopliszation of the american encomny and this is why people should en vote and should -push for change dont sit around and twiddle your thinking god i wihs things would change get on your en feet and start calling start rasiing questions be a en american and do what we do best stir up to make people pissed off. if they cna launch propganda then the normal person can to them its silencing the littles and listening to the bigs start calling your newspapers start emailing start going to your local newws stations and refusing to leave till they listen to you send boxes full of papers stating how this is so imporatnt of an issue. seirously defience is the whole answer

This is a good idea and true. But it is extremely hard to raise the type of money to lobby members of congress, especially when you would be up against corporations like universal, virgin, sony music, etc, who have deeper pockets than much of America combined. It is a fact that to win a position in the American federal government, you must spend alot of money. In the 2002 congressional races, only one or two candidates who spent less than their opponent (I am talking only about the 2 major parties, which is a whole OTHER can of worms I wont open here) won their races. More money means more time on TV, radio, and other forms of advertisement. It means you can pay to rent a bus and travel around, meeting people, talking to them, and convincing them that you fight for them. You can target underage Americans, implanting your parties ideals in them through the boundless forms of entertainment that they are forced to participate in (because non-participation often equals social outcasting) and begin to sway them before they are even able to vote. And you can spend your money in any one of hundreds of ways to convince people that you represent their interests. A coalition dedicated to raising money to fight unconstitutional practices would be nice, but several of these organizations already exist. Eventually though, they all must submit to the interests of those who supply them with the money to keep their fights alive. If those people are of a non-partisan conscience then all can be well, but as Im sure we all know, this rarely seems to be the case.

Sorry to bring such a political post to the music discussion forum, but it all ties together, especially with tomorrow (today for many Americans) being a target day for such a large organized movement. I can only help that people follow through with their pledges to help. If anyone needs additional help contacting their representitives, please feel free to PM me or post in this thread, and I will contact you as soon as I can.

I really dont, and if I sounded like I claimed to, I take it back. Let me try again? I just feel as though lately youve been trying to goad people into fights because an emotionally charged response is less likely to reference fact then one in a rational discussion. If this hasnt really been your intent, I apologize and you should ignore me and what I've posted (you likely already are). But if you're really that annoyed with people posting the things that they have been lately, why would you continue to come back?

do you not relise how important of an issue this is, no matter what country you are in its very important as alot fo countries weathe ror not you want to belive it model their laws after america as america funds many countries. do you also not relise how morally wrong it is to contiue to allow laws to be created by people soley becuase of the purpose that they have money. this has nothing to do with partys all partys are guilty of it and all poltics are its very important to fight against such injsutices as thats what being an american is about. its about not having the fear to stand up for your belifes and your rights without cruel punishment and unjust actions. this is an unjust action and untill people step in and start caring things like this will contiue to happen and it will only esclate and escale you must show the polticians that the people taht put them into office are much mroe important then the people or give them a new car and house everytime they sign a bill for that company.

I'm not annoyed with what anyone posts. It seems to be other people who are annoyed with what I post. Seriously, every time I post something in here (good or bad, i've tested this) someone has to argue about the hidden meaning behind my message. I don't have any problems...you people do.
