Gay Scholarships

This topic could really get me started just to warn you.
The idea of awarding scholarships based on sexual orientation is pretty disturbing to me. It continues a line of scholarships available to people based on what I would consider to be physical characteristics. I agree that scholarships should be available to those deemed "underprivelaged" or based on achievement, but I be hard-pressed to ever find a situation in which a person should be given a scholarship based on normally occuring physical characteristics, except in cases of physical deformities.
The way I find most fair to judge the validity of a scholarship is to award a scholarship in reverse and then access how the public would react. For instance, if we were to give scholarships for heterosexuals, based on their sexuality alone, would we deem it fair? I find it hard to believe so. That being said, how can a scholarship, again based soley on sexual orientation be fair in reverse? |

| :haha: If it doesn't affect you, don't pay attention to it. I could care less about this. But I wonder when the homosexual community will start putting pressure on the congress so they can have their own public bathrooms. |

| Um, it's a charity guys. They can spend their money how they like. If you don't support allowing gays into college (I mean, could you imagine if they started using our drinking fountains?) just don't give them any money - isn't that how charity normally works? |

I'd have no problem with you have a hissy about that. Again, I think scholarships should be given on the basis of need and merit, not anything that the student is either born with physically, or chooses to do socially. If we're going to allow scholarships based on sexual orientation, or continue the practice of giving scholarships based completely on ethnicity, why can't we have scholarships for heterosexuals only, or for whites only? Can you imagine the outcry if there was an established whites-only scholarship, or how about a neo-nazi scholarship? The double standards in this country are sometimes breath-taking. |

There have been scholarships for fat people, a david letterman scholarship, a lefty scholarship, a goodie goodie scholarship, a pot scholarship, a scholarship if you know someone named "zolp", etc., etc., etc. You can organize a group and give a scholarship to anyone you damn well please ... it's your money.
