I wish we could have parties like this again...

I just got off the phone with Mark Oliver who told me that he is playing at a power plant party in Edmonton tonight. How cool does that sound? I wish we could pull that off here in Toronto like we used to. I miss the old parties in warehouses, meat coolers, on top of garbage dumps (honey pot ski lodge) or just about anywhere else you could get a space. It made partying an adventure.

That's what I loved about WEMF '03.

Dirty, dirty, hard-core partying in a supa-ghetto venue... life @ it's fullest.. dancing non-stop in a sauna.. or better yet, a swimmingpool filled with dirt.. good-times.

they do happen, you just don't know about them. ;)

Exactly!

Half of TA was around in the 90s. Those are the ones that dont complain about whistles etc.

The other half are just too young to know and have never seen a real underground massive thanks to the fact that they are now banned (like everything else in Canada)....

There are two main differences between the Guvernment and what people are talking about in this thread: the sketch factor and the tourists.

Sketch factor means not just dosing, but seriously ed-up idiots drunk or G'ed or on PCP, making a total nuisance of themselves, falling all over the place, being belligerent and starting fights, pushing around and rubbing up against people, and generally destroying everybody else's energy and vibe.

The tourists are the trendies, the Barbies and Kens, who might also be sketched out but not necessarily, and go because it's "hip". They stand around on the dance floor judging everyone else, giving them attitude, and trying to look cool for the other tourists. They're there to watch a show, starring 10,000 people who actually know how to have fun. In a party sense, they serve no purpose other than to fill space that could be used for dancing.

Cream in Montreal was at least as crowded as any night at the Guv, but the absence of those two things was what made it a fantastic night as opposed to a painfully disappointing one. Nobody pushed me around. Nobody got in my way. Nobody gave me attitude. Pure all-around energy, love, and good vibes, and still with 10 times more beautiful women than you'd ever see at the GUV. :p

And when people talk about raves in a super-ghetto venue, they're talking about the same kind of thing - no tourists, no one causing trouble for everyone else. I mean somebody might OD and start having seizures in the parking lot, but they only hurt themselves and not everybody else at the party. If anyone says that they've had a night like this at the Guvernment, at least in the past 2 years or so, they are either lying or just haven't had the chance to experience a truly "great" party.

^^ what he said.

The problem is Toronto. Boa apparently has a fun little vibe but i hear the counts there are not very high. This tells me that there are a few fun people out there like in Montreal but not nearly as many as there should be.

Hopefully with the addition of new venues, if done properly, there can be a resurgence of true club culture in this city. Guvernment is a great club with great music hands down but sadly it's the Toronto scene that has declined, not Guvernment.
