What a great Night! It was much needed for me.PVD laid down techno and hard trance that had hands in the air all night....I didnt like the fact that some moron tossed a glowstick into the booth stopping the music for a few seconds.pvd looked pissed off and he tossed the glowstick back into the crowd but it didnt come close to putting a damper on the crowd as a pvd chant started.that was tech trance at its finest. He pushed avalons speakers to the max
I caught a few spots...
Lovefist - Hanging On A String (E-Craig Mix)
Ron van den Beuken - Endless
Paul Van Dyk - For An Angel (Remix)
Josh Gabriel - Alive
Dahlback and Chrome - Murder Was The Bass
Cosmic Gate - Billingual
Then went over to rise for a few hours of steve porter.
:)
PS thanks to the guy with the bottle of greygoose who spared a few chugs of the quality vodka for me on the dancefloor:):eyes: |

i hope that you were at least there to make this unqualified statement. there were at least two songs played that none of you could name right now that were awesome. i don't think his sets sounded like this two months ago. this was not a sensation-tracklist-only set. eg. no summer dream, and a couple new tracks. just because you heard some songs in powerzone or something does not make them stale!
anyway, i loved it. i think it was as high energy as 2 hours in a club with pvd can get. i was mad pissed off about the bull happening in the lines outside, and the club was overly packed, and yes, the kid who through the glowstick needed his ass BEAT. |

I had an alright time. It was relentlessly hard, blisteringly fast, and in my opinion, monotonous.
This was my fourth time seeing Paul van Dyk at Avalon, Boston. I remember Paul van Dyk used to mix into the opening dj's set, starting out around the ~130 BPM that he was given to work with, and over the course of the first 1/2 hour to 1 hour he would build things up to his more familiar pace. I used to love that first hour of music. It was still completely and uniquely PvD sounding and he was stretching himself out of that little comfort zone of peak-time bangers that he has so many of.
Nowadays he skips right to the peak time material from the start. His set starts completely full-on, and it ends full-on. I know alot of people really enjoy that, so I'm not saying that it's inherently bad or that anyone is wrong for liking that. I am, however, saying that I personally love Paul van Dyk's ability to build things to a frenzy, rather than what he did last night, which was just to launch directly into that frenzy.
I still had a generally good time though. I really like the last few songs he played; a lot of them really were quite beautiful and made me smile, I will always love hearing "For an Angel" in a club, and "Murder was the Bass" was genuinely sick.
I can't believe someone threw a glowstick up and knocked the tonearm off the record. I saw it happen, and it was like in slow motion to me....oh jeez. I wouldn't have minded if Paul just whipped it right back at the kid who tossed it up, lol. He handled it well and played an awesome encore song.
I hate Avalon when it is too crowded, but I think the trick is to stand on one of the steps leading down to the dance floor if you want just a little space to dance. The steps are good because they are a clearly defined space which require people to be blatantly rude in order to move you from. Basically, once I secured a space on the bottom step next to the actual dance floor, everything was good. But trying to stay on the dancefloor itself was a nightmare. Way too many sweaty, tipsy guys in tank tops.
Also, I hope some of you made it out to Steve Porter at Rise afterwards. That was a blast! Some of the songs I remember:
James Taylor - Shower the People (Agent 001 Remix?)
Steve Porter - Vodka Cranberries
Ferry Corsten - Rock Your Body Rock (seriously sick breakbeat remix!)
Armin - Blue Fear (amazing! came out of nowhere with this one, and it was just nuts!)
Encore:
Rob Base & DJ E.Z. Rock - It Takes Two (lol, this was awesome, ol' skool hip-hop to the fullest)
Over all, it was a good night. Paul van Dyk was a 6/10 when the crowdedness is factored in, and Steve Porter at Rise gets an 8/10. |
