Email server

Hi all,

I've just set up a small LAN at home. I've got each machine set up with it's own email account -

pc1 - david@mydomain
pc2 - mammy@mydomain
pc3 - daddy@mydomain

Currently, they're all set up to send + recieve emails from mail.mydomain.com

does anyone know of a way of setting them up so as i can send mail drom david to mammy without going through the mail.mydomain route?

I'm using an ISDN to connect to the web, it'd take a while to send a 10mb email, so i'm just winderin if there's any alternative?

I'm using a workgroup, not a domain.

Nothing I know of (short of running mailservers on each machine). The way I understand "emailing" works:

Your machine connects to mail.yourdomain.com and delivers the mail using SMTP (Simple Mail Transfere Protocol). In your case mail.yourdomain.com is the target server, so it stores the mail there. Later someone else (your mom/dad/whatever) retrives the mail from mail.yourdomain.com using POP3 or IMAP (probably).

Your machine has never a direct connection to the final recipients machine, so circumventing the storage on mail.yourdomain.com is kinda hard.

If you run a mailserver on each machine at home, you can send mails directly to [email protected], assuming that that.machine.yourdomain.com resolves to the machine in question (you can define these locally in the hosts file on each machine). If the only purpose is transfering files, I suggest running a FTP server on one machine, or using that Microsoft Network stuff.

i see that you are running an LAN Workgroup network with email accounts ... judging the fact that you say the emails run slow, and you are running ISDN, do you have your own email server or a third-party server from another server ??

i agree with the other guy .. use FTP .. it's a lot easier if you are running out of your house, and you want to email some large file to your mum and dad .. you can just drop the file in the server, and they can fetch it anytime at the specific location.

i don't think you can go outside the email loop (SMTP) ..
