NEW TOP 200 Electronic Music List (non-dance?)
View this Thread in Original format
orbsplateau
Hi,

I thought it would be a good idea to create a new TOP 200 list to complement the TOP 100 list we already have. We have a list that features some of the best trance... how’bout a list that gives other types of music a chance?

Just a TOP 200 Electronic Music list.

I know this is a trance website, but most of you seem to listen to all electronic music and you seem to know your stuff pretty well.

Hopefully we’ll see more songs by

Future Sound of London
Autechre
The Orb
Aphex Twin
Sasha (airdrawndagger?)
Mu-Ziq
DJ Shadow
Morph (stormwatch)
Leftfield
Higher Intelligence Agency
Hybrid
Orbital
Moby
Paul Oakenfold
LTJ Bukem remixes

So... ambient, transient, drum&base, experimental, trance, all types of techno - ALL WELCOME.

Instructions:

Please list your top 20 favourite tracks in this format

artist - song title (remix: optional)
artist - song title (remix: optional)
artist - song title (remix: optional)

....

* Please start with your #1 choice and move down (descending order).
* Please do not include any ranks (e.g. 1) .. 2-... 3: )
* Please do not place “quotations” around song names.
* If you’d like to comment on a song (e.g. “nice melody” or “great drum works”) please do so at the end of the list.

This will make the compiling process soooooooo much easier.

The new list can be released as soon as we have about 100 votes... although we can keep it going for a while if you prefer.

enjoy.

Cont. from the previous thread:

Sasha - Xpander (Deconstruction, 1999)

Fond memories from when I dug out an old crumpled Ibiza compilation at my cousin's place. Probably the first time I truly realized what an emotional impact music can make, which is probably why it deserves no.1

Ben Sims - Manipulated (Adam Beyer Remix) (Primate, 2000)

Arguably the track that started the latin techno-wave. While this particular trend took a turn for the worse as people realized it's commercial strength, this still remains one of the most powerful techno tracks in history, and has been caned for years on end both with and without vocals. The infectious hook combined with a bullet train bassline and ram-raiding beat programming knocked me sideways when I first heard it, and is majorly responsible for my interest in techno.

Juno Reactor - Nitrogen Pt.1 (Electric Melt, 2000)

Another dark, squelchy journey from one of the true masters of psychedelic music. One of the few tracks I've heard that manage to succesfully incorporate as many elements as possible while at the same time making it sound clean and on point.

Dom & Roland - Imagination (Moving Shadow, 2000)

Drum n bass/jungle was the first genre of EDM I was ever exposed to, and this track has made the biggest impact on me so far. The pitch-black, post-apocalyptic sound shapes that Dominic Angus has painted here pulls some of the darkest strings of my personality, and drives it home with a vocal sample that never worked better than here:

"There are times, Catarina, when I find myself transfixed by a shadow on the wall, or the splashing of water against a stone.... I stare at it, the hours pass.... The world around me drops away, replaced by worlds being created and destroyed by my imagination.... A way to focus the mind." - Star Trek Voyager: Scorpion Pt. 1

Spicelab - Falling (Harthouse, 1994)

If I have to pick just one Oliver Lieb production, this would have to be it. It encapsules pretty much every aspect of his talent that I love, be it visionary melodic qualities, razor-sharp beat precision or hypnotic, entrancing moods.

The Herbaliser feat. Latyrx - 8 Pt. Agenda (Ninja Tune, 1999)

Ollie Teeba & Jake Wherry's smoked-out dub goodness meets Bay Area heroes Latyrx, whose timing I've yet to see anyone come close to. Rapid-fire rhyme exchanges from one mic to another with such precision and speed that you'll have trouble figuring out who's spitting what line.

Nightmares On Wax - Les Nuits (Warp, 1995)

Just sublime. George Evelyn, where the hell did you get those strings from? Wherever they're from, nicking them was a pure stroke of genius. Coupled with his impeccable taste of funk and soft female vocals, this is raw beauty.

Albion - Phönix (Time Unlimited, 1997)

Michael Kores isn't the most consistant producer I've come across, but at his best he conjured up some dancefloor gems that are just out of this world. This is one of them. Relentless prowling acid that twists and mutates along with a thundering groove that never lets go. I remember being transfixed for several minutes when I first heard this on my headphones.

Demon - Heartbreaker (2000ST, 2000)

Pure urban romance. The contrasts are just piled up in this one, going from subtle female chanting to laughing studio messiness in a matter of seconds. One for those hot summer evenings in the city, when the sun flares red across the sky, skaters pull off some of their best tricks in the background, that gorgeous girl smiles at you as you pass her by, and the big, concrete city shows off all its glory.

Man With No Name - Floor Essence (Perfecto Fluoro, 1995)

I remember this from an anti-drug ad on TV when I was little. When I found out what it was a good 6 years later, I got what is probably the biggest deja-vu experience in my life to this day. The track itself shows off MWNN's polished synthwork at its most energetic, and hits all the right chords for a true stormer of a track.

Paul van Dyk - Avenue (Vandit, 2000)

Still my favourite Paul van Dyk production. A lot can be said about Paul nowadays in terms of career moves and musical development, but when Paul hits all the right buttons like on this one, he tugs at some heartstrings that very few artists manage to get to.

Point Blank - Meng's Theme (Brave New World, 1994)

Jeroen Verheij aka Secret Cinema's finest moment. Contains some out of this world futuristic vibes, coupled with fluttering subtle melodic workouts and powerful rhythmic sensibilities. Track down In Order To Dance 5 to hear it, as the Brave New World release has a pressing error.

Cass - Genesis (Fire, 2001)

Another trip into Cass Cutbush's head. Bubbling with hazy, drifting atmospherics, quirky, bubbling samples and droning beats, it clearly predicts the experimental mentality that Cass would show on his later projects, such as the label Sabotage Systems.

Organic Noise - The Vacuum (Liquid Audio Soundz, 2000)

This one comes from my first encounter with psytrance, Deepseafish.ca resident DJ Dam's radio show Psykiks on 1groove.com. Back then I used my crappy ISDN connection to tune into his shows, which was brooding with dark, menacing psy trance records. On one of the guestmixes he aired, ECT (Phantasm/Psychic Deli) hit me with this one like a force 10 hurricane. Oozing with pure evilness from every pore, it kicks off with eerie moaning voices, plunges you further and further into the darkness before a hair-raisingly tense breakdown swallows the listener whole. From that moment on, I was hooked, which didn't bode well for my parents' phone bill.

NOTE: Just found out that Organic Noise = Ben Wierzoch (Planet B.E.N) and Jan Müller (1/2 of X-Dream). Why am I not surprised..

Vibrasphere - Airfield (Acid Casualties, 2001)

"Airfield" grabs the spot a hair ahead of Rickard Berglöf and Robert Elster's gorgeous downtempo gem "San Pedro". The icy cold, mechanical darkness that this tune brings makes you feel like you just landed on an airstrip on Mars. Combined with the usual subtle melodic feel that I've come to love about this group, this one is a winner.

Beastie Boys - High Plains Drifter (Capitol, 1989)

Have to have a tune by the Beasties in here. High Plains Drifter is my favourite track from their best album ever, "Paul's Boutique". I always like rappers best when they tell stories, and here Adam, Adam and Mike do that extremely well. Their laidback, cool style with lightning timing combined with the Dust Brothers' superb production and hilarious sampling ("Suuuuzy iiiis aa heeeeadbanger", "OUTTA THE CAR LONGHAIR!") make this tune stand out just a wee bit more than the others I've heard so far.

Speedy J - Grogono (Plus 8, 1995)

After hearing Loudboxer, A Shocking Hobby or Collabs 100/200/300, you'd be forgiven for thinking that the artist name on the Plus 8 release "G Spot" was incorrect. "G Spot" is about as far from the harsh, abrasive noise-techno mayhem on his later releases as you can get. It's filled with lush, string laden, home listener-techno, gorgeous downtempo workouts and this, a 5 minute rush of pure melodic ecstasy. Just goes to show that Jochem Paap and techno in general is so much more than the banging loop tracks by Adam Beyer and Chris Liebing.

Dusted - Always Remember To Respect Your Mother Pt.1 (Go!Beat, 2000)

Roll over Faithless and Dido. Dusted is the epitome of Rollo's talent. The sheer emotional power of Alan Young's choir vocals coupled with Rollo's sublime downtempo spheres is something you don't come across very often. It never fails, every time I put this track on I have to struggle a bit with some tears. That alone makes it worthy of being on this list.

JFC - Rotating Minds (Elektrolux, 2000)

My favourite track from one of my alltime favourite albums. One of THE tracks I use to just disconnect from everything around me and drift away to wherever my mind leads me. The all around incredible soothing vibe of this track never fails to imprss me.

Brancaccio & Aisher - Darker (Reset The Breaks Mix) (Player One, 2000)

Oakey may be a cynical business man whose only goal in dance music is to make as much money, do as much coke and be as cool as possible, but that doesn't detract from the fact that he has played and pushed some of the most amazing tunes I've heard in my life so far. This is one of them. Vicious, pounding beat programming sharply contrasts the shimmering synth trickery that is conjured up on this track, resulting in a tune with an incredible amount of punch and energy. Sadly, like many of the other gems Oakey played back then, this never made it further than a few white labels. Good luck hunting it down.

It doesn't matter what you tell people or how you ask. If you have an open poll here on TA about the best EDM tracks, the top 200 is going to be filled with 85% epic trance.

This man speaks the truth. What makes you think adding an extra ten votes will mean people will fill them with anything but more trance?

I guess so... but I did say "top 200 electronic music" and not just electronic danse music.

My goal is to get some more variety in there. I really want a list of the best "non-dance" to complement the list of the best dance/trance/house.

If someone votes for the same songs here as they did in the other thread then it means that their top 20 list includes only trance... but I'm hoping that it won't be the case, at least not for most people.

Besides, there are some amazing trance tracks out there that really do deserve to be on a top 200 list of the best electronic music.

i'll post my list just cause i want to spam it, but i don't think you're going to be any succesful with this, i mean, the last voting ended last week.. and as said before putting more tracks wont help at all to the diversity of the list

maybe an idea to make it more diverse.. making the voting avaiable on several boards, from several EDM styles. though it would always be biased towards the dimension of the boards and the scenes. or making it just on discogs forum. that would most likely generate a few nice flame wars between who likes charts and who doesn't :p
