Clapping during live performances...

first off, this is non-edm related
so idk how many of you do this yourselves, but why do people always clap while performers are playing?
i find it to be really incredible annoying, and thats just when watching a performance, let alone playing
for anyone who's played a live performance of a piece that changes time signiatures or anything, clapping is sooooo annoying
sure the audience feels they're involved, but then all of a sudden you go to change the tempo and you have your drummer playing one beat, but a really heavy steady 4/4 beat coming from elsewhere telling you you're wrong
sry i was just watching a live performance of victor wooten playing amazing grace (amazing bassist, check him out), and he speeds up at one part and keeps speeding up and audience is so off its ridiculous, but people still insist on clapping
i guess it could be a similar type deal to that 'woo woo' i've heard in clubs, there was a thread about that a while back
i mean, people never clap to EDM when there's actually a clap in the song

I guess people do what they feel is right. Buying a ticket pretty much gives you the right to do whatever you want at the event. As long as you're not the only one clapping, then everything is okay. Just let them be and enjoy the show as they feel it. :)
edit: shouldn't you be studying? :D |

yes mother:(
haha just playin
but yeah i'm gonna get to that, i've already done an hour or two's worth of calc today, and i gotta run uptown and buy the reader for my sociology class before i can do that
and i mean when the band encourages it then its cool
but esp. with like more jazz oriented performances
i was in a band two years ago and we did 'mellowship slinky in b major' by the red hot chili peppers
and we screwed around with it a bit, made it a bit more funky and added some solos
and it was just really annoying when people'd be clapping and we'd be trying to slow down the tempo
i say a simple foot tap and head bob is plenty until the piece is over
and seriously everyone, if you've never heard victor wooten, try to get classical thump by him
its just him and his bass guitar, its mind blowing |

| Or when they start screaming or shouting things because the band adds a kick drum or high hat or something to the rhythm...bleh. |

| Yea clapping annoys me too, mainly because they either do it with a song that doesn't go well with it, or they just go off beat, but realize it way too late and ruin the moment. |

the more drunk people tend to be, the more clapping that seems to go on.
i think it's all right if you do it to the beat maybe once or twice [like 10 beats or so], but that's about it.
when i've performed before [playing piano, that is], i often found clapping to the beat was a bit distracting mainly because it was "my" beat, and i didn't want people fudgin' with it. lol
afterwards, when the show is over, i think it would be appropriate to do so, just as a sign that "hey DJ, you kicked ass!" |

| It creates a nice atmosphere at the concert or wherever you are at.. The thing that annoys me is when people can't clap in time.. E.G. i was at a metallica concert and they played nothing else matters.. The tune is in 6/8 and everyone is clapping in 4/4.. it's ing annoying.. But hey everyone can't understand basic music theory :D |
