Technical question about beatmatching (pg. 2)

There not detecting sound, seti searches for radio waves dude.:rolleyes: They also can detect different wave lengths of light. |

As a computer scientist and a DJ I think Liam brings up an interesting idea. Of course current software and hardware does not come close to humans but I can definitly see the software Liam discribed (well maybe not the "crowd reaction module" that one had my smiling). Of course it will not be the same as a great DJ but we all know there are plenty of formulaic DJs out there and I bet eventually a program could do a pretty good job emulating it.
Of cource just because a computer program could do it does not mean it would replace the DJ. You are right that people come see a DJ at a party (or is that just the pompus DJ in me talking?).
I just wanted to say that I don't think the idea is that crazy, just don't expect it in the next few years. |

A computer MIGHT be able to 'analyze' what would go together regarding key, and harmonics.. etc... but really its a DJ's job and skill to read a crowd in every different scenario, and play a set that they are going to enjoy and go nutz at, even if that means that you drop a few tracks that are not keyed or have the same harmonics... and a computer can't do that, and prolly won't be able to until I am DEAD...

Yes there is software that can beatmatch well, Myxoft's DSS DJ does an awesome job as long as the music has a 4-4 rhythm to; which most trance and EDM does. It's easy for a computer to mathc anything with a straight beat.
Sometimes the software has trouble with breakbeat, and can't match hip hop for sh*t.
Where the human part comes in that a computer can't do right now and probably won't be able to do is create/alter the atmosphere and feeling of his audience through the music.

I am a CS major as well. It might be possible, however, you would have to account for everything and devise some kind of algorithm that would handle each case. Kinda like the creation of an AI. |

lol, computers are logically limited, so there would be the danger of it realising that track made the crowd go ape, and just keep playing that track whenever the dance floor gets empty.
and what about for warm-up sets? you would have to switch off the crowd reaction module otherwise it would bang out anthems right from the start :p

The 'auto-mix' computer DJ application may be useful to replace such things as jukeboxes right? maybe for a diner, or dive bar,...etc...[some small venue]...
Af course, it is going to be awhile till this happens[maybe like 20 some odd years]..but i see it as a definite *possiblity*.
Maybe the first models might be loaded with a bunch of POP music.... |
