Curiosity Thread: Why Trance?

Ok so I am pondering... why do you guys like Trance so much still? I know that I once took great pleasure in listening to trance but that was a long time ago in my book (small exceptions here and there). Generally speaking I am not a genre hater. I separate my music based on what sounds like its quality both in production for individual tracks as well as set formation.

Personally I can't see anything about trance that is interesting that goes above the usual high and lows, recycled melodies and basslines. I can understand if you are just getting into the scene, because I remember those days well and even long for them sometimes when I wasn't so jaded. But for those of you who have been doin' this for 4+ years (random number thrown out there) I would like to hear an honest reason for why you still listen to/even choose trance over other genres.

Please respond if ONLY if meet the following criteria:

- listened to EDM for over 2 years.

- do not base your musical judgements on the quality of the substances' you have taken at clubs.

- do have at least some appreciation for other genres of EDM and don't base your decision on who to go out for as to whether they are on Dj Mag's top 100 list.

If I already know your answer to this question still post it for the sake of argument. This post is made with all sincerity because I want some perspective on trance now from those that still listen to it since I am so 'out of the loop.'

My Answer is simple. Its a type of music I was introduced to at a very young age thanks to my druged out step father. I mean I like ALL types of music but Trance or EDM in general really gives me a great feeling when listening, mixing etc.

ive been listening to trance for the 2-3 years. i dont mind house music at all especially at a club. i still listen and enjoy trance because i am addicted to it i need to hear it when i get when i drive to school when i drive to work. i just need it in my life and i cant help it. what is so wrong with that and why do you care so much?

nothing is wrong with it. I am curious because I want perspective. Question is what is wrong with THAT?

P.S. your response sucked, but thats ok. Anyone can be obsessed with music, why is the question. I know ya'll love it or you wouldn't constantly post on TRANCEADDICT.

hm i've listened to a little bit of underworld, chemical brothers about 5 years ago? they were the ones to introduce me to EDM. after that it was listening to paul oakenfold via a recommendation from a friend, then the GUs and i've just branched out from there. i think for me, at school especially, it provided very good background music while studying, and gave me a little bit of a pep while reading ty economics books. in the club, listening to certain tracks still has me jumping around. i will admit however that trance lately has kinda bored me. i'll probably be vilified by saying this, but pvd (in february, not CPSS), armin (both ny visits this year), and tiesto (at avalon) have bored me/not impressed me at all. pvd at CPSS and ferry's avalon set in february redeemed trance in my eyes somewhat. lately i've been more appreciative of progressive, house, and breaks, and it's like, "hey, i get it now" when i listen to these genres. but i'll still have part of my heart in trance.

trance is what i started listening to about two years ago...and even tho there is a lot of repetition and cheese out there...the best tracks can still lift me up when im feeling down n give me a happy feeling in my heart...and i still kinda believe in the vibe that it brings...**shruggs** this year however, i have been opening up to different genres as of late such as breaks and funky/hardhouse and now i love those as well...

however, sasha and even pvd (the first real trance dj i listened to) will always draw me back to what i started with...

imo every genre could get boring. Everything in life can get boring. Sounds like you just got bored of trance. What tipe of EDM do you favor now, if you still listen to EDM? Prog? House? Most(probably all) music is just recycled sounds/synths/melodies and basslines. are you looking for something different?

Naw, there is lots of stuff pushing forward. I am mostly into fusion, Minimal, acidy sounds. Basically the new stuff that is being pushed out now by lots of producers in Barca and Berlin. Those are great sounds that are so new and refreshing. I had a techno phase, but I find Techno to repetitive and lacking in feeling.

To dance too I would say that Deep House and Breaks really get me moving. My roommate is a big DnB head so I have found myself listening to that but its clearly not a genre thats getting pushed. DnB sounds are pretty static at the moment. THough some of the Jazzy Jungle thats coming out now is really fresh.

Usually I am always looking for new sounds. I am bored of trance because new stuff that comes out just doesn't stand out. Prog is boring me for the most part. Tech House is on the decline. I don't really care about a Dj's/Producers name so much as what they are playing/producing. Hence why I am not interested in people like Tiesto, PvD, Oakenfold, Sasha, even Sander who I use to really admire. I won't even mention others because they weren't really pushing at any time. The above did at some point, though don't anymore. Anyways this is about what you guys think so speak up.

yeah that is how i started out as well.

from there, i was having a few problems and listening to music with words in it made me so depressed, so i switched to music that didnt have so many words and where i could concentrate on the sounds....from thre i was hooked, b/c i wasnt so damn depressed anymore....and if i am having a bad day or have a lot on my mind, i put the music on to relax and stuff.
bottom line: it helped me out...
so i dont know if that makes any sense to you, but it does to me...

I go to all kinds of different events, with all kinds of different music, and for the most part, I enjoy it all. Been doing it since the days when "James Brown is Dead" was considered "techno".
But it is especially trance that gives me a great feeling when I hear it.
Sometimes the lyrics of dance music (not just trance, but particularly) are amusing, if you pay much attention to them - amazing how sad songs are often made to sound so happy
