Disillusioned with work...

..so here is an old theme, but I'm going to revisit it. I've been feeling totally e while at work these past couple of weeks. I've lost all motivation to work for the corporation (Bell) that employs me. This happens to me with every job. I get bored, and can't find the challenge with work.

I was wondering if any of you had any advice about coping with this kind of thing.

I'm aware of all the small things you can do to make work more bearable (posting threads about work on TA), but I'm wondering if a lot of you have the same problem I do. What strategies do you use to cope?

This whole feeling started after reading a thread earlier in the week. Someone wrote something that really stuck with me. They were commenting on working for corporations, and said something like: "Why would I work to achieve someone else's dreams when I have my own that i'd like to achieve?"

So, what is it you guys do to stay sane at work?

Take the breaks you're entitled to.

& Lastly if you're truely not happy. Get out if you can!!!

I work for CIBC and can totally understand. I'm finding myself fairly bored and if i'm not bored and am fairly busy its the same sort of work. The challenge is gone and now it's just the same old stuff. What do I do? I try my best to mix it up, to take on more responsiblities but there's only so much I can take before it all dries up. On the plus side to the corporate world there are endless opppertunities to move on somewhere else. I find a great solace in knowing that pretty soon i'll be moving on to something new (until I get tired of that ;))

I would love to get out of here. it's hard to do though, because the money is good. I'm not sure it's really worth all the funkin' headaches though

What is it that you do there?

Is it a rigidly structured position, or can you talk to your manager about taking on new responsibilities to use the skills you aren't using?

Just this week I had that convo with my new boss - and she was very open to me branching away from my job description a bit to take on things that are more suited to my interests and skill set.

hah Who was the hippy that wrote that?

I love my job, but I think I'm the type to make everything fun anyways. But listen, I know loads of people who hate what they do, but do they ever make up for it on the weekends.

Work is work, but that shouldn't stop you from enjoying life. Party hard, or do whatever it is that makes you happy outside of 9-5. Especially if it pays well, take the cheque for the meantime and rock & roll.

easy said for you jon, but you have to realise i feel lost sometimes like that i know the feeling you lose motivation after a while

Cataclysmic, its giving you a sign now, that its time for you to move out or move up if your getting burned out doing the same thing over and over.

I know its too much trouble moving up or out but its a challenge.

I have a fairly open ended job description. I'm a project manager for the most part. There are other things I do however. Including email correspondence for extremely escalated Customer Service issues. I think you're right about trying to branch away from my day to day duties.

Halo does make a good point. Weekends are definitely the saving grace. I'm definitely happy with things outside of work. I go out and party as hard as the next one. The forty hours of work a week do take their toll though.

I really think that Maxtuh makes a good point too though. Moving on is tough, and all, but it's a challenge. maybe a challenge that i need to take on...

If you are living for the weekend though, that's not happiness. You spend so much of your life at work, try to enjoy it.

That being said, I hate my job, but I'm trying to look for something else while also trying to make my current job more interesting in the meantime.

I guess that's just the way things are. You have to continually develop new challenges for yourself when working. Be that through new opportunities with your present employer, or through moving on.

It's amazing how quickly loayalty in the busineess world has been abandoned, not that it's a bad thing at all. Back in the day, it seems as though employees felt some sort of obligation to stick with one company and move up that way. This just isn't the current landscape of the business world.

If you're working for someone, they're taking 40 hours (more or less) a week from you... you don't owe them anything.

Hey, that was me who said that. ( i feel special ;) ).

Anyways, you have a few options. I find myself in the same position as you very often. You can approach it in 2 ways. 1. the corporate way or 2. your personal way.

The corporate way would be to sit down with your manager and
- discuss your current position and growth within it.
- start career path planning with them
- ask for additional special projects that show your capabilites.
- come up with some proposals to reinvent the way processes are done to be more efficient / effective.

You wont be the first one to do that and they are not going to blacklist you or anything. A good manager helps their team grow and Bell has these career building options.

You can always do things like use the extra time to work on your own personal business aspirations.

Im totally for good work ethic and loyalty but remember, there's life after BELL. Always ask yourself, is your company as loyal to you as you are to them.

Personally, Im on the fence with this one. I do both.

I think you and I are a lot alike; I get bored really easily and I require highly challenging work to even bother considering staying at a company.

I realise it's hard to leave a position that grants you the finer accoutrements in life, but a person spends so much of it investing in their job you might they may as well opt for something that will make them excited when they rise in the morning.

I suggest this because I've had to take on positions that were not in my field over the past 3 or 4 years. And I've had many moments of solace in jobs of security. But then I reflect on how hard I've worked to get into my profession, and finally after so much effort I'm right where I want to be.

People view happiness in different; for some it's monetary, and for others it has to be more. Regardless, it feels great to bite the bullet and screw the predictable.
