Where to begin building a record collection?

Alright so I got all my equipment, now I face the daunting task of finding and building up a good collection of records...where do I begin? I'm not even really sure what I want to spin, I'm into progressive, hard trance/house, hardcore/happyhardcore, deep house and a little d-n-b and jungle.
Should I just go to record stores and listen to records and buy what I like? Speaking of record stores, what are some good ones in Los Angeles?
Also, whats a good number of records a newbie such as myself should have to start out with?

If you like the tune, buy it. If you like more than you can afford, get the ones you like the most. As your collection grows your sets will begin to have their own unique style, since your whole collection represents everything you're into.
And for gods sake, don't just buy records that you see the big jocks play. |

i agree with the guy above.
if you want to have a "record collection", collect anything you see i say. from cheap to expensive.
then when you reflect back in five years, you look back at the records you have, and you remember the history when you played those records.
i have a whole bunch of old cds and records that i stll continue to ask myself why i bought them.
they're usually a good way to educate yourself on the EDM culture and who's been raping it, and who's been representing it with style. |

| the thing with records is that you'll inevitably end up buying stuff that doesn't fit with each other, or that after a couple months isn't your style anymore. seeing as you still don't have a good idea of what your style is going to be, probably your best choice would be to just buy your fav tracks and see how you develop, then look into selling the ones you stop liking or that stop fitting a few months later. |

what are you telling about selling? i save them all, until the deterioate. i still have stuff from the early 90s. can you believe it?
i actually have a dj dado cd. i thought it was cool back then. the only reason i bought it was because of the 'x-files' theme, |

well.. yeah, i dont think i'd sell any of the vinyls i've bought even if some now aren't my style anymore, i was just suggesting another possibility for him |

Some record stores in L.A. are Amoeba on Sunset. It has alot of records. ALOOOOOOTTT. then go to Backside in Burbank on san fernando.
and thats as much i know

Does Ameoba have turtables to listen to records before you buy them? Otherwise I might have to buy one of those nifty mini battery powered turntables from Numark ;) |

uhh...if its a respectable shop they will.
then again ive never heard of someone buying stereo and dj equip asking how to hear new music| |

| i dont think there is any right place to start. just buy what you want man. thats what im doing. i hear a track, i like it, i throw it in my wishlist.... then when i have enough money, i order. |
