Anyone who knows anything about software developmen will appreciate this. The graphical stuff is just an add on. the main benefits would be the open ended platform. Its an alternative to windows and anyone administering a microsoft env can tell you about the security concerns.
Looking forward to it. |

OK, all they showed was gimmicky crap. How do you know that this OS will be more secure than Windows? I agree they should work on security, but instead these guys are spending their time making their OS "3-D" which is completely useless. |

It'll be more secure because :
1) It's open source
2) It's based on unix OS
Stop rendering desicion on how useless this product will be. It's in development stage for gods sake. I wonder if some of you guys can graspe the concept of having a vision which is what this project is about. It's not something you are likely to see for a few years, so it's purpose at the moment is basically to wet the appetite for developers and get them thinking about the future of OS. To hear you guys say it's useless just makes me wonder if you've ever actually part taken in a creative, innovative design venture before. Something tells me you haven't.
Lets give the Sun development team some credit here. I'm almost 99.99% sure they are more intelligent then most of us here.
I for one am quite impressed with this project and hope they can showcase some of this new systems features in the years to come.

Definition of geeks: A bunch of IT guys who stand around looking at a software in development stage and then laugh about how useless it is, without understanding what the project is all about.
:D
IT guys always laugh at Developers, it's about the only thing they can do...IT is for people who can't program. IT guys make websites with dreamweaver...Developers make dreamweaver. :D
Additional info for those who actually 'care' about development.
Sun representatives describe Project Looking Glass will usher in the next era in desktop operating systems.
"We first started toying with the concept of a true 3D desktop operating system enhancement tool, or skin, a couple of years ago," says Craig Nicholas, technical support engineer at Sun. "Although Project Looking Glass has been under development in-house for some time, we feel that, if it is really to succeed, we need to have other developers working on it. With their input and expertise we will have a 3D skin complete with working applications in the not too distant future."
The reason Nicholas refers to Project Looking Glass as a skin, and not an operating system, is because it is merely that--something that sits atop an operating system.
"At the moment Project Looking Glass is still in development, and so only runs on a computer using the Java Desktop System. We are currently shipping the developer's version with Java Desktop System and Solaris, and plan to have a working version available for Linux," he says.
The company has been showing its 3D desktop for some time. However, the developer release may indicate the project is coming to fruition.
"Our whole goal while developing Project Looking Glass is to give users an uncluttered workspace. We also want to give users the ability to easily manage their desktops. For example, with Project Looking Glass, at the touch of a button users are able to easily view all their open windows, so, instead of having to ALT-TAB through dozens of windows at a time, we developed a solution that lets users view them in a similar fashion to viewing files in a filing cabinet," Nicholas says.

| they're just gonna be competing with the new Windows/Longhorn OS that's supposed to have a particular mode that much like "exposé" mode on a Mac, it organizes everything onscreen, but in a 3D interface kind of way.... read up on the sneak peeks at the new Microsoft OS.....definite competition with this one. |

Except that it's Microsoft so we can safely assume a few things :
1) It'll never be completed on time
2) Once it is completed it'll be shipped full of bugs
3) Once it's shipped, they'll be a host of new service packs that will supposedly fix all the bugs
4) The service pack will be delayed
5) The service pack will have it's own set of security faults
6) Microsoft will annouce a new version of windows, promising to address all security risks and make us wait for another 2 years.
Heh. Open source will always win out in terms of quality...unfortunately it's a little bit like David vs Goliath -- even though in recent years Davids been getting a little bit stronger.
Still, competition yeilds superior products...or so i learnt in my economics classes. We shall see... |
