| The entering fee makes it a little easier for them so they wont recieve too many mixes... but it also makes it look a bit shady to ppl who would like to enter. Also... is this competition international? In what time will the winner get his slot? (wouldn't be cool to wait for that gig for a year or two.. or more) |

To be honest this comp sounds like a heap of .
Yeah so maybe you will get to open for someone vaguely known.
I think the fact that they are charging you to enter rings dodgy as hell.
Knowing the DJ business they way I do, the problem I have is this...
If you enter a competition and don't pay for it, it may be a fix, they might let their buddies win and play the warm up for whoever. You may have entered but you haven't lost anything other than time.
If you pay...
You have no idea of the criteria that they are after, you don't know who is judging, how qualified they are? Where is the money going? What styles the judges like, and being the US I bet that there are more Hip Hop DJs up for it.
If you are limiting the amount of entries then it makes no sense to open it to all styles. What is 'Giant' mainly known for?
If only 100 people enter they still make $2000. Do you think they will send your check back and say sorry, but we already have reached our limit? Maybe, but maybe not...
If 1000 people enter you are talking 20 big ones. Keep in mind that this is not the only forum they have posted on and there are ing thousands of wannabe DJs out there, especially if you don't limit yourself to any particular music style.
For that sort of money you can bring in those big name people, but the fact is that they have offered no set date. The details are so vauge and I have to say that this feels as if it's deliberate to let your imagination run wild.
I may be putting a bonafide competition in a bad light, but to me this reeks of scam. Any wit can set up a bank account and call it groove tickets.
If you are going to run a comp like this do it properly.
If I see this run as a credible comp then I will naturally retract this post and apologise for any bad press I have caused but as it stands this sucks ass.
If you are credible then you should know better! :whip:
A lot of DJs are young people who are really struggling to get a break not to mention pay for an education. This is designed to use them in a bad way and it's not cool.
There are no links to any of the mentioned parties websites either and what DJ wants a years supply worth of CDs from some record pool?
I don't get personal very often but this is not cool.

I agree 100% !
I actually posted a reply that said exactly what you said about 6 hours after this contest thread was posted but than later deleted it because I didnt want to seem like an if this was indeed legit.
Something just doesnt sound right to me.
$20 for a comp.
30 min mix.
No offical rules
No offical website
BTW I never enter a contest where you have to pay. Just some advice for some of you fellow TA's |

I ask how can you judge someone on a 30 minute mix, fair enough if people are silly enough to enter you may have alot of mixes to judge fairly but with trance thats about 4 or 5 tunes. Poor, I'd be just getting started and then I'd have to finsh it. :whip:
Waste of time and the fact you have to pay 20 dollars to enter hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm. :whip:
Calls for thread to be deleted. :whip:
edit. make it 1 dollar and have Marco V and Push as the dj's I'd be opening for and I might make a mix. :D |

I don't think it's a scam - Groovetickets is a legit ticket-selling company.
Having said that, I think the problem is that it's probably either poorly organized, poorly run or both. My guess is it's some marketing whiz's idea... you know the kind of "whiz" I'm talkin' about. :wtf:
Entry fee. OK I understand.
30 min. Boink. Bad call... unfair to judge any DJ or any kind of DJing in that short a timespan. It's like a photography contest but contestants can only send in 64x64 pixel pictures. :eyes: |

It sounds like they're having money problems... and this is such a cash grab! |

Actually, if you can't rock a crowd within 30 minutes (which is all they're asking), you may have some problems getting started with gigs. ;)
Especially if you're an opening act. |

I Love Techno holds a competition for up n comers to play at their event. The competition mix can be no longer than 30 min. BUT... they don't ask for money... I did, however, pay $40 to fly the mix over to Europe!!! Their approach is that they're discovering an up and coming talent... which would reap a greater reward (if marketed properly) than charging $20/mix to judge it. |

Yes but rocking a floor is totally different to a couple of tunes on a very very short mix tape.
Its so short it doesnt even give a chance to build it up-
I (as usual) agree with the wordly wise nem and vote a) Crock of |

i agree with Nem 100% and if i remember correctly... this Groovetickets is breaking US law :whip: okay because i do believe that we have a law that states something about fraud and what not about this kind of thing you know paying for a contest that you might not even win... its just like that whole "get a DJM600 for $80 bucks where about 10 people have to sign up blah blah blah.."
i meen i could be wrong but like i said, i do believe that this contest of yours Groovetickets is agaist US law... so im going to say this as nice as i can your sick for playing off of these peoples dreams of being a DJ... and i have these dreams too... though like i said i do bleieve there is a law agaist this so watch your ass.
end rant... |
