i think it basically means...

Those that do no wrong are happy. They give up desire and put faith in god, so they are blessed...

well first lemme say that i haven't seen this movie, so i'm just reading into it what i can from what it says. here is what i got out of it...of course i could be wrong i dunno...

quote:
"Happy is the blameless vestal's lot."

what is a vestal? a vestal is most commonly something that is associated with purity aka vestal virgins or someone that has taken on a position as a nun or something. a blameless vestal then would be one that has kept that purity and lived a life without sin. the reward for this life is happiness.

quote:
"The world forgetting by the world forgot."

this part is pretty tricky and i'm sure is up to differing interpretations, but i took it to mean that the world has forgotten the lessons of the world forgot (the past). whatever those lessons can be atributed to i dunno, but it seems clear to me that pope is saying that we have forgotten something in history, in the 1600's that could be a lot of things, but i would argue that it probably had something to do with a lack of morals in society or something like that and that perhaps society had forgotten the lessons taught by religion.

quote:
"The eternal sunshine of the spotless mind, each pray'r accepted, each wish resigned."

the eternal sunshine i take as a reference to a state of this spotless mind. once again, this spotless mind i take as a reference to this pure life that has been lived, spotless as in without regret and hence you would be granted this mental state or heaven or something similar. the last parts each prayer accepted i take to mean that because of this purity of life, your prayers will be answered by God. That being said, the last part of each wish resigned, you are obviously resigning something or giving something up. something that you wish for is something that is desired, and in the context of the quote i would take that desire to mean those things which you have given up in your choice of a pure life. you have given up those desires and therefore you are rewarded by god.

like i said i dunno...just a thought on it. what does everyone else thing?
