Incorrect.
What happened with ephedrine was that the government "politely asked" the stores to take them off their shelves. It was never criminalized though, so there's no penalty for getting caught with it. You can still find it in just about EVERY health food store. It's only illegal to sell if the bottle recommends very high dosages; there were also products that combined ephedrine and caffeine and those are now illegal, but you can just as easily get 'em separately and it's quite legal.
So no worries. Just don't take too much. |

The reason they took em off the shelves was because people were taking them as diet medicine and like the idiots they are, assumed "more is better" and took too much, making themselves sick. I think some people had heart attacks or something, but I might be wrong. |

You're partially correct - people were taking them as diet medicine and as energy pills for workouts, and I think high doses can cause respiratory problems. More importantly though, people were mixing them with caffeine in high doses and that was causing heart attacks.
If you stick to the recommend dosage of ephedrine + caffeine you'll be fine, but the government got a little worried (and rightly so, in this case) because nobody ever obeys the recommended dosage on OTC products. |
