Egypt blasts may be linked to Gaza: report
Last Updated Sun, 10 Oct 2004 14:02:57 EDT
TABA, EGYPT - Palestinian militants enraged by Egypt's plans for the Gaza Strip may have carried out the deadly bombings in Red Sea resorts, investigators reportedly said Sunday.
Citing Palestinian and Egyptian sources, the Associated Press said investigators are questioning Hamas and Islamic Jihad about the blasts that killed 34 at Egyptian resorts on Thursday.
They are said to be seeking information about group members who are angry about Egypt's plans to police the strip if Israel withdraws.
Some Arabs believe the move would help Israel; Egypt says it is trying to maintain stability on its border.
Three car bombs exploded Thursday night at resorts popular with Israeli tourists, one at the Taba Hilton just metres from the Israel border and two in Ras an, a camping area south of Taba.
The Egyptian bomb investigation has focused on Bedouin tribesmen, who were suspected of providing the explosives in the bombing at the luxury hotel.
A tribesman has confessed to selling explosives that might have been used in the bombing, AP reported Sunday.
In early September, Israel warned its citizens against traveling to Egypt, citing a strong terrorist threat.
In an interview published in the paper Yediot Ahronot on Sunday, Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon said the government wasn't planning to close the border.
"When an urgent call is issued to Israelis to return from Sinai, a certain degree of responsibility needs to be shown," he said.

This is interesting...
When the Mossad gets pissed, the world had better take notice. I smell a little bit of "Operation Wrath of God" action going on here.

Mossad makes Al-Qaeda its top target
Uzi Mahnaimi, Taba
THE ISRAELI government has ordered Mossad, the foreign intelligence service, to make the hunt for Al-Qaeda terrorists its main priority after last week’s Red Sea attacks that killed at least 33 people, most of them Israeli tourists.
Egyptian officials said yesterday they had detained dozens of bedouin tribesmen on suspicion of supplying the explosives for the blasts at the Taba Hilton and at a bungalow beach camp 35 miles down the coast.
As rescuers pulled more bodies from the wreckage of the hotel, Dan Arditi, Israel’s counterterrorism chief, urged tourists still in Egypt to come home, warning that the attacks on Thursday “don’t lessen, even in the slightest, the risk that this will happen again”.
The order to Mossad to turn its attention from Palestinian groups to Al-Qaeda was given by Ariel Sharon, the prime minister, after Israeli intelligence sources said the size of the blasts suggested they were the work of Osama Bin Laden’s network rather than Palestinian suicide bombers.
