Well as requested heres a review of Holden at Avalon last night...
Well I got there around 1130 and Alex Whalen the Opening dj was laying down some great tracks towards the end of his set.He played Petter-These Days,Bedrock-Emerald (Some Breaks Remix of it),and finished with NuBreed and Luke Chable-One Day (Dub).
Around Midnight Holden Came on and dropped some darker progressive house/breaks to start things off.He messed with the tracks somewhat and the mixing was very good. Some of the tracks he played he the sickest basslines and breakdowns. He then dropped "Nothing" and I also heard Nathan Fake-The Sky Was pink (Holden's Remix).Towards the end of the night he banged it out with harder dark progressive house and trancey progressive.Overall it was a pretty decent set.I'm sure he can do better though.
The crowd was pretty weak compared to the past couple of weeks (Bad Boy Bill,Gabriel and Dresden,PvD) but it was a fun night regardless.
Also got to meet holden and he's a pretty chill guy...
Went over to rise for a bit for groovefire but ended my night around 4:sadgreen: :p
P.S. Nice to see DiMethGuy,Stasis,Sandstorm,Umes,Pvds11Dj,and anyone else i saw last night:) |

I had a really good time at this friday. James Holden has such a unique sound, and so it was really refreshing to hear. Alex Whelan also did a good job warming up comsidering that Avalon didn't even let people in until 11!
It was good to good to see some familiar faces, and over all the crowd was nice. However, you could really get the sense that probably less than 1 out of every 10 actually knew who James Holden was, but whatever, that's obviously not gonna ruin my night :)
Trackwise, James Holden kept things really intersting, playing a good mix of retro/electro sounding stuff with the more classic fuzzy Border Community material. I went with 2 other buds of mine, one who is really into djing culture and dance music as much as me, and he loved it, and the other who is more of a casual edm fan, and he said he couldn't really get into it. This kinda leads me to believe that Holden's sound is so out there that it's probably a bit of an acquired taste. Nevertheless, I really enjoyed it, and it seemed like the crowd was really into it as well. :toocool:
Some trainspots: (not in any order)
Nathan Fake - The Sky Was Pink (Holden Mix)
Nathan Fake - Adamedge (amazing to hear in the club, definitely one of my favorites of the night)
Holden and Thompson - Nothing (either an accapella used over another song or an unreleased remix)
James Holden - A Break in the Clouds (some really dubbed out remix with only a snippet of the melody)
Daft Punk - Alive (that was crazy! I don't think anyone realized what it was except for me, but he definitely played it!)
Steve Lawler - Out at Night (Nathan Fake Remix)
Also, I didn't make it to Rise afterwards, but we went to Chau Chau's in Chinatown for a while, and it was insane. Imagine a 3 story Chinese restaurant PACKED with people at 2:30 in the morning, waiters running everywhere, people yelling in Chinese all around you: absolute bedlam. The food was awesome though, and remember, asking for cold tea = beer. ;)
Good times! |
