I've been playin around with my computer for a while, and can mix anything with a 4-4 beat very well, not just beat match, but verse and phrase match well now too. Getting bettter, but not super proficient at hip hop. I was going to get a set of Denon dns 1000 and see if I could start doin house parties or gigs that would be ok for a beginner spinner(lol that rhymed).
Anyway, I live in Tallahassee, FL(that is where Florida State University is). It is significantly divided into three parts, the locals(who are also college students), out of towners(mostly from major cities in Florida, a lot of Miami), and not to be racist, black people.
The subsets tend to listen to totally different music. The locals are the rock/country/Abercrombie/American Eagel kids, out of towners have the whole gammet with each set liking their local cities music; which if you know EDM you know which city likes which type of music, and the black people obviously rarely deviate from hip hop. I love old school and booty, that's what I grew up hearing.(I'm white and from Miami for clarification, lol)
So now to the actual point of this post:
How do I go about getting to DJ a house party that will like the music that I am good at playing?
Only problem is all the parties I've been to everyone is always just sort of mingling and the usualy party hijinx, not dancing.
I had a huge party at my house once. My roomates kept putting on rock and it was so ty, everyone was just talking. I finally put in a booty CD turned off the lights, turned the black lights and the place went nuts!! It was so much fun. So to my next question.
Does it really matter who's there? Will everyone like the music as long as it's not too "techno"(in their minds)?
In conclusion(can ya tell I just graduated college..)
It seems to me as long as you play stuff that's on the radio or similar in style not matter what you play you'll be ok with the crowd??
Thanx for any help,

Throw your own.
Every crowd is different. If you're mixing mp3s then just bring a load of everything. |

I kind of already know that, and this is probably my fault for writing so much, but my real purpose for the post was to find out HOW to find/get to spin at parties.

as far as house partys go, you could do with knowing the people who organise them. if you hear about a house party, just approach the person who's doing it and ask if they want a dj, and if so can you do it. i've played quite a few large house partys, but every time i have known either the person who is organising it, or someone who i know who knows that person who could put a word in. all you can do is ask, and all they can do is say yes or no :)
try something different on people.. if it doesn't look like they like it then move to something else. try and take into account what the people like and try and blend their likes with your likes, kinda meeting in the middle, for example, people who like hip hop or d&b, will almost certainly enjoy listening to some breaks as its very similar to those genres. don't just blast out what you like and nothing else, because you will be guarenteed that you won't be asked to do it again if they didn't like you ;) |
